• FEED2EXEC instead of GWENE?

    From yeti@yeti@tilde.institute to tilde.meta on Mon Oct 6 13:39:00 2025
Using Gwene I stumbled over some feeds, Gwene just won't accept and
dropping issues about that into MSGitHub did not help much. And
sometimes one may want to rename the folder/group for a feed because the
same authors added a second channel or more, so they should be in one
new common prefix, but that seems out of reach with FeedBase and Gwene completely or at least when it happens too often[O].

So I was thinking about using Feed2exec at home. It should not make a
big difference to get the feeds thrown into a Maildir or IMAP instead of
NNTP, because I can read both through the same lens.

Newer Emacsens seem to have updated the nnrss and/or nnatom methods, but fetching stuff probably still blocks Emacs, so feeding Maildir, IMAP or
NNTP via an independent process seems nicer and being independent of the client/frontend looks like a more flexible solution.

Are direct "Feed2NNTP" hacks out there?

Renaming IMAP folders ™should be™ easy, the same for NNTP may be a bit
    more tricky.

Getting F2E installed and minimally configured definitely is not the showstopper:

    <https://yeti.tilde.institute/tmp/20251007-161527__feed2exec__hackaday_via_imap_in_gnus.png>

If happy with it, I think it should run under an own UID, unless it is
able to fake a different address into the headers.

Gwene would show the images inline in Gnus. F2E posts' images are
loaded on demand in Evolution (I could enable that by default, but I do
not want that for every trash mail).

RSS is not my highest priority problem now, so it might take a while,
but in the long run I want a solution.

    * Started using [DEFAULT] and added two feeds that fail with Gwene.

    * I'm still searching a way to reload IMAP's folder list, currently I
just close the server in Gnus' server list and reopen it. There has
to be an easier way. That already annoyed me accessing the guinea
pigs' mail in my LAN because I instead of using a central mailhub, I
just give every papoy an own IMAP server (silly & flexible), but let's
keep that for an other rantastic day.

Ok, not a beauty, but via Gwene it would have been the link to the clip
only, so not a big difference:

Seems the YT video's links are only put in a normally hidden header:

    | Archived-At: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-Yy-ILjM3k

That may be changeable after weeks of staring at F2E's code, but not
right at the start of using it.

Turning that header to always visible in Gnus will be easy, but that
won't make it "clickable". I'll need some time to decide and mayhaps I
should look at Feed2IMAP (Ruby) first?

Just modifying the post in ~/Maildir may help to make that header
visible by default independently of the MUA:

    Not ™good enough™ as ™permaneat™ solution.

Next problem is folder naming in Maildir and different MUAs handling
that in different ways or even failing. THAT SUCKS! I haven't even
managed to remove the empty nested dirs Evolution showed trying to clean
up after tests. So far Gnus handles IMAP stuff ™good enough™.
