• Russia's unimportant economy

From Sean Dennis@618:618/1 to All on Wed Feb 23 00:11:05 2022
    Hello All,

    (From Breitbart Business Digest, 2/22/2022)

    ===
Harvard economist Jason Furhman recently described the Russian economy as "a big gas station." That's not quite right. Russia is a big gas station in a huge field of waving grains. It is the largest supplier of wheat in the world. Russia and Ukraine together account for one-quarter of all the exported grain in the world and nearly one-fifth of exported corn.

But Furhman is right that apart from food and energy, the rest of Russian economy is incredibly unimportant to most of the rest of the world. Russia's total Gross Domestic Product was $1.6 trillion in 2019, making it the world's 11th largest economy. But it is just the 40th largest buyer of U.S. exported goods, amounting to less than $6 billion, in part because its GDP per capita is so low. As of 2019, Russian GDP per capita was ranked 57th. It's the 20th largest supplier of imported goods to the U.S., selling us $22.3 billion worth of goods in 2019.

On the other hand, Russia's unimportance to the world's economy also means that the world's economy is somewhat unimportant to Russia. That limits the amount of pressure that economic sanctions can put on Vladimir Putin unless they hit Russia's energy and grain exports. On Tuesday, the U.S. and allies said they would put sanctions on two Russian financial institutions closely linked to the government, and Germany said it was suspending work on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia to Germany. But because the pipeline has not yet been completed, the suspension will have almost no economic impact on Russia at all.

Joe Biden seems to know that the sanctions announced on Tuesday will not actually provide much by way of deterrence. Even while announcing the sanctions in reaction to "the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine," Biden indicated that he thinks Vladimir Putin will continue his moves against Ukraine. The sanctions were described as "the first tranche" of sanctions, implying more are to come. He said the U.S. still believes that Russia is "poised to go much further in launching a massive military attack against Ukraine." We'd say it was as if Biden had told the gas station that we weren't buying milk there for a little while.

The global oil market on Tuesday initially reacted by sending Brent crude to $99.50, the highest level since 2014. But oil fell by around three percent as it became clear that energy would escape sanctions. No doubt Biden dreads putting an embargo on Russian oil. Russia currently supplies around one out of every 12 barrels of oil to the U.S., around 700,000 barrels a day. Cutting off that supply would likely push up the price of oil, at least in the short run, and eventually gasoline prices for U.S. consumers. It would add to the inflationary pressures already besieging the U.S. economy and could interfere with the Federal Reserve's attempts to bring down inflation.

There's another possibility highlighted by recent history. One of the reasons the U.S. currently buys so much oil from Russia is that we have sanctions on Venezuela. Russian oil, in other words, is filling the role Venezuelan oil once did. Similarly, if the U.S. and a few allies--but not the rest of the world--imposed an oil embargo on Russia, the Russian oil would likely be bought by other buyers, and the oil producers displaced by Russian oil would sell to the U.S. That would be good news for the U.S. economy and the Biden presidency. Unfortunately, it would also be good news for Putin because it would mean Russia still has plenty of buyers for its oil.

Biden promised on Tuesday that he'd work to make sure the sanction hurt Russia but not the U.S. That will be a very difficult trick to pull off.

    Hello All,

    (From Breitbart Business Digest, 2/22/2022)

Afaik, Venezuelan oil is very low quality and needs a whole lot of post-processing, which is the reason why they can only reliably sell it when prices skyrocket (because they can sell it cheaper than other competitors).

I think EU politicians are cringeworthy with the Ukraine crisis. Seriously.

The Russians walk in with tanks and soldiers and vodka bottles, and the onlñy thing the EU politicians get to say is that they are gonna raise tariffs, but only on products they don't really need.

Then some Russian minister grabs a mic, asks "Are you sure that you want to pay 2000 eur for each m³ of gas?" and leaves, because he needs say no more. I am sure Putin is afraid, scared to death and hidding behind his massive Spetznaz army because he fears Europeans.

I think it was mostly the fact that there was a precarious balance most people was ok with. Sure, the Putin wanted to recover the glory of the URSS empire, but as long as he had no NATO bases at his gate and he could sell gas to Western powers, he was at a Nash saddle point in which he could sit as the KIng of his kitchen and be content with the situation.

Fast forward and the NATO tries to include UKraine in the deal. The Nash equilibrium is broken so Putin starts brandishing tanks left and right because he wants it back. Ukraine sees how bad things are going to be and declares they are ok not being in NATO as a way to get the situation back to normal. The European and American response is "fuck Russia, we are not gonna give an inch to Putin!"

The problem when you tell somebody with tanks to fuck himself is that he fucks you with his tanks. If Putin is not getting his saddle point equlibrium back he may as well try and expand the URSS a bit more because the truce has been obliterated anyway.

If Trump had any useful and groundbreaking political skill, it was that he knew better than poking beehives whose bees were minding their business and bothering nobody.

They like apples and carrots better than grain, but alfalfa is their absolute favorite. No contest. One of them also seems bent into stealing my pepsi cans.

If you bring out some hay after they have been eating da good stuf' they start looking at you with acusing eyes. YOu have to convince them to eat their vegetables. They are like kids :-)

Very nice article on the subject.

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Grain is not poisonous to horses. That's
    an unfair comparison.

I think Biden was injected with a fast-acting monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). They were first used to treat depression but MAOIs are also give to people who have severe stage fright. The lower level of MAOs in your blood, the more "brave" you become.

"A type of antidepressant called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) can be more effective in treating social phobia. However, they are rarely used as
a first line of treatment because when MAOIs are combined with certain
common foods or other medicines, dangerous side effects can occur, including death." (from https://cogbtherapy.com/medication-for-social-anxiety)

When the "drug" wore off, Creepy Joe was acting like a MAOI had just worn
off and that is why I have that opinion.

I have heard Russia has been kicked out of SWIFT, which will make it harder for them to perform international transactions. I suspect this will make Russia develop commercial ties and alliances with Asian powers as a defensive maneuver.

Something today suggested to me that Biden pretty much forced Putin to invade, as a way of making Europe limit the import of Russian gas so they would become more dependant on American gas instead.

They could just use Transferwise I guess, but in Europe the king way of delivering a wire transfer is the SWIFT system.

However, they are rarely used as a first line of treatment because when MAOIs are combined with certain common foods or other medicines, dangerous side effects can occur, including death." That is not unprecedented. Something similar to that happens now between
the USA and Canada. As a Canadian once explained it to me, Canada has intentionally limited refining resources. So, they have to sell their oil
to us, we refine it, and then sell the gas back to them, which makes prices there higher.

    this is some crazy stuff

    "December 22, 2021 at 8:31 p.m. EST
President Biden on Wednesday said he would run for reelection in 2024 if he's "in good health," adding that he was eager to possibly face Donald Trump.

The president, confirming his past comment that he would seek four more years in the White House, said during an interview with "ABC World News Tonight" anchor David Muir that he would run again if his health did not deteriorate. Asked whether he would run against Trump if the former president was the Republican nominee, Biden chuckled and said he would.

"Why would I not run against Donald Trump as the nominee?" Biden said. "That would increase the prospect of running.""

he is literally proving trump right every day and still says that.
