Actor John Cena issued a video Tuesday apologizing to China and saying he "loves" the communist state after he made a "mistake" in recognizing Taiwan as a country while promoting his new film.

Mr. Cena, who stars in the ninth installment of the "Fast & Furious" franchise, "F9," sparked outrage in China after giving an interview to Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS and saying in Mandarin, "Taiwan is the first country that can watch "F9," the New York Post reported.

China does not recognize Taiwan's independence and considers the island part of its territory.

Mr. Cena, who reportedly has studied Chinese for years, later issued an apology video on Weibo, China's social media platform, saying he "made a mistake."

"Hi China, I'm John Cena. I'm in the middle of 'Fast and Furious 9' promotions. I'm doing a lot of interviews. I made a mistake in one of my interviews," the former WWE star said in Mandarin, according to the Post.

"I made one mistake," he reportedly said. "I have to say something very, very, very important now. I love and respect China and Chinese people. I'm very, very sorry about my mistake. I apologize, I apologize, I'm very sorry. You must understand that I really love, really respect China and the Chinese people. My apologies. See you."

Mr. Cena was ruthlessly criticized in the U.S. by both sides of the political aisle for the apology, with many critics tying it to China's ongoing genocide of its Uyghur minority.

I am glad I am not an actor or sports professional who feels like they need
to kiss China's rear end every time they say something that is allegedly offensive. China's government is apparently worse than our "woke" citizens when it comes to being offended by everything.

This one is really bad in my book.

I get that the Chinesse are becoming great consumers of B-movies and that they are likely a big
part of Cena's audience, but siding with the Communists in this one is a no-go.

I am marking this guy as a non-watch from now on.

first time I saw it I left assuming it was Russia and Cuba but was that actually spelled out in the movie?

I'd heard the same thing also and that was the same thought I had about
North Korea invading the US. When it comes down to it, Hollywood will do anything and kiss the dirtiest ass for a buck.

My mother was complaining yesterday about Hollywood in general. Mind you, Spanish film making has been junk for decades, and she spent a lot of energy defending Hollywood against snobs that said Spanish cinema was better than 'murican :-) So she is disappointed by the turn the industry is taking.

She said we need a branch of alternative cinema that does not bend knee to this crap and only tries to entertain. Kind of like the old action movies of the 80s, which had no other pretension than being mindless fun. In her opinion (which she borrowing from me) we should not be consuming Hollywood material for as long as they use our money against us.

That makes sense where I would assume "Cuba" at the age I saw it. :)
