that's good. i buy white label hitachis off of amazon and i had some fail and i got some new ones from the buyer (it was after almost 1 year). amazon is great for doing refunds, though.

And.. I was poised to get one of the WD Blue ones myself. But
I opted for a Crucial MX.

Last night, my WD Blue SA510 SDD just died. Was able to find my W11 SSD
I had that came with this computer when I bought it so I am under W11
right now. Luckily, Amzazon is refunding me the full purchase price.

Last night, my WD Blue SA510 SDD just died.

How long did you have it in operation before it died?

Was able to find my W11 SSD I had that came with this
computer when I bought it so I am under W11 right now.
Luckily, Amzazon is refunding me the full purchase price.
I'm looking at getting a Samsung 980 M.2 2280 1TB NVM-e

NVM-e seems to be the new interface for things like ram and
SSD.

Myself, I only have various pcs with SATA or PATA. I settled
for a Crucial MX500 1TB NAND 3D SDD for my T60 Thinkpad.

A friend of mine had installed a Crucial 250GB SSD in his
laptop dated 2012 and has been very happy with it. .: We're
both upgrading our laptops with the Crucial brand.

so the computer was off until the HDD got here.

thankfully I am not out the $. I think for now, I'll put the refund
into savings and repurpose an older but seemingly reliable SanDisk 500GB
SSD I have in my HP EliteDesk 840 G1 laptop and slip in one of the two

Typically, I buy Crucial or Samsung SSD drives. I've never had issues with either, and do know that most enterprise systems use Samsung SSDs.

On the spinner front, HGST is the best. They are now Western Digital Gold or Western Digital Ultrastar Enterprise drives. I only buy the Ultrastar Enterprise drives for large arrays for home.

The Ultrastar drives have a 5 year warranty, which is fantastic. I had bought several used Ultrastar drives on Ebay that were still in warranty - and a few in the batch ended up being bad with bad sectors or failing tests (I think they were damaged somehow). Either way, Western Digital replaced them in warranty with no issues.

Backups are super important, that's for sure. I look at it like this...

If I don't have a backup of a particular drive or system, it has to be something I can live without and don't need at all (like swap space, temp storage, etc).

Everything else gets backed up. I keep 30 daily images of all systems and separate file based backups of some in addition to images. All are disk based backups. I actually have a RAID5 array that is dedicated to just backups and is 21TB in size.

There was some type of relationship with Toshiba and HGST. I think Toshiba was the "consumer drive" and HGST was the enterprise drive.

That's nice to have that kind of warranty. Amazon gave me no grief in giving me a refund on that WD SSD.

Often times I'll buy refurbished enterprise drives, since you can get them pretty cheap. If you get the quality HGST/Western Digital Ultrastar drives - they are fine even if refurbished. They last forever.
