• FTP in browsers

From Mike Powell@618:250/1 to SEAN DENNIS on Fri May 28 09:27:00 2021
It has been a while since I used it. I forget that most browsers no longer allow ftp directly so the QWK via the web interface link is now broken. But the other options still exist. :)

That behavior can be overridden. I think it's stupid since FTP is widely used and some protocols don't need to be overly secure just because the most widely used OS has more security holes in it than Swiss cheese.

Thought I might move this over here as I have more questions and don't want
to stray too far off topic where we were. Is that a behavior that the host
can override, or does it require the client to make config changes on their end?

    Thanks!
    Mike

I installed FileZilla for Windows, and use that now for any FTP requests.

That's what I use as well. Though I wish FileZilla could "register" itself
as am FTP application like WS_FTP used to be able to. Back then if you
clicked on an FTP link it would open up WS_FTP to handle the request.

I also used Filezilla back in the day, and it was a fine solution. Extra points for supporting sftp
    too.

Nowadays I think most Linux file managers have support for sftp or ftp out of the box, which is
quite cool. I use the command-line ftp tool quite often myself. ay better than having to install a
    full featured graphical client.

As an interesting recommendation, you guys could check Swiss File Knife (SFK). It is a portable
binary with an array of integrated utilities for sysadmins that need tools to solve issues in a
pich. It comes with both an ftp client and server, http support, checksum tools and a wide
collection of other goodies. It works on Windows, Linux and Mac. Great for those times when you
have to transfer some file from a computer to another.

It's all on the client's end. FTP itself is a pretty stupid protocol but that's what makes it work so well all the time.

There is only one Windows version offered for download that I

    Mine is:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>h:\myutils\fciv -md5 sfk.exe

// File Checksum Integrity Verifier version 2.05.
    //

But it runs ok on my Win7/64 pc. I haven't tried in on my

Not sure where you downloaded it but the official page has two versions: http://www.stahlworks.com/dev/swiss-file-knife.html

From the front page: "Download SFK for Windows here or from SourceForge.
SFK x64 is available here, XP here. You may also download the .zip file
with all binaries and source code for Windows (XP to 10), Linux and Mac, the Intel Linux binary for 64 bits Ubuntu, for 32 bits Intel Linux, the binary
for libc5 systems like DSL, for 32 bits ARM Linux like on Raspberry Pi, the
Mac OS X i686 binary. No installation, instant use."

    The 64-bit version:

    The 32-bit version:
