Because you can be guaranteed you will still be doing it 3 hours later
I couldn't tell you how many nights I spent in my IT career doing a
"quick update" on some system, usually Windows, that took eight hours to update instead of only two.

But of course.

Ubuntu Server was bugging me to upgrade from 18 to 20 lts . So I
finally logged into a console and started the process. Took me far too long. Think it was 3 am when I finally finished
I 'inherited' a server farm running some ancient VMs, some of them are still running 14.04. Not looking forward to getting everything up and supported.

I have a blade server for awhile. Christ was it noisy and expensive to
run. Gave it away with pleasure :)

My HPE ProLiant ML110 G6 server is a mini-tower but it can hold four hard drives and two 5.25" drives. It was a good purchase and I'm glad I made it. I have a Dell PowerEdge R710 blade server that I'm going to give to Andrew. When I can, I'll drive to Andrew's place (12 hour drive ... probably a two day drive for me now; no more "balls to the wall" trips
for me) and hand-deliver it to him. <G>
I want to get one of them. Maybe then do away with some of the Pi, or
find another use for them

I have a use for one of my older Pis: a Ham Clock.
It's a specialized setup for amateur radio operators that shows several pieces of information that we hams use in our hobby.
https://www.clearskyinstitute.com/ham/HamClock/ has more info on it. I
am thinking about setting up my 3B Pi for that.
I'm also considering getting the latest RPi 4 to set up a private VPN using OpenVPN for myself so I can work on the BBS securely via VNC from remote. More info about doing this here:
https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-create-a-vpn-server-with-raspberry-pi
I am waiting on most of these projects because I need to do a few things and obtain things like a new cheap monitor for the Ham Clock (mine are
all dying).
I am saving that for a project now :) I like the look of it
I have 2, one is openvpn and the other is wireguard. The openvpn is on
my mother's network as I need to sometimes log in remotely and do work

It's useful for non-hams if you know how to mod it. Once I get a new monitors (or preferably monitors). this old HP 23" monitor will become a Ham Clock.

I'm hoping to get over to my parents' place this week and I can grab the 3B to bring over here to try setting up a VPN. I want a RPi4 since the Ethernet port doesn't share the same bus as the USB (which makes it faster) but for the BBS, the 3B will be fast enough.
Later,
Sean
I keep trying to do my basic HAM licence here in
Ireland, maybe should pull the finger out as I have all
the PDF's on my nextcloud setup.
I have all from a Zero up to the 4, just waiting to get
a 400 as a laptop replacement for light work

I have spoken to both Ireland and Northern Ireland before from here on both 20 and 40 meters (though both were noisy). I am off the air right now as one of my radios was hit by lightning, the other radio's finals
may be messed up/blown and I am in an apartment so I will have to get creative in how I get a HF antenna up. :D
I am looking at getting an ICOM IC-7100 (160 meters through 440 mhz in a single small radio and the head unit is very nice; looks like a Motorola desk head) if I get Social Security. Around $1100 new but I cand find
one used online in good condition for 1/3 to 1/2 price new. I am a big ICOM fan as I like their setup.

I've seen those 400s and I've heard very good things about them. The
only thing I would do is shoehorn Devuan on there for my own personal taste.
my father was very active in HAM but never kept it up for some reason.
I known during the CB hay days, I used to get some decent signals here
and once managed to get South Africa :)
Yeah, I want to make a small laptop for travelling but something that
will only do what I need and no more, I had toyed with a Chromebook
and maybe still look at one

I am off the air right now due to problems with my radios but once I can get them fixed and possibly purchase a new rig, I will definitely be
back on the air even if I have to hide my antenna during the day and put it out at night.

I have a couple of netbooks that work great running Linux. They're just buried in a bunch of junk. I'd like to see if I can get a HP Elitebook 840 G4 laptop with a high resolution display. They're business laptops
so no gaming on them but they all run Linux wonderfully. I have an 840
G1 right now and it is showing its age a bit because it is low
resolution (1300x866 or something). It's a good emergency laptop though running Devuan Linux.
