• fibre experience, anyone?

From August Abolins@618:400/23.10 to All on Sat Apr 20 08:40:00 2024
Anyone here have techinal insights and experience about fibre
    installations?

I was scheduled to have a fibre installation the other day.
First, the tech was given the wrong address. After that was
rectified, he told me that he was told that my building "didn't
qualify", even though we could see spare loops of fibre cable
on some nearby poles, *and* there were even two spare ports on
the terminal. My neighbor had a fibre feed to his building, no
    problem.

When I asked what "didn't qualify" meant, all he could tell me
was that first there wasn't any "assignment" for my address -
which was later corrected - but something else is behind the
"didn't qualify". As a tech installer, he had no idea what is
behind those classifications. With two spare "unassigned"
ports, that seemed strange to the tech. He was simply told
that they weren't available to use.

I had a similar issue with Robers Cable. I had been with a reseller of
Robbers (Fido) for 7 or 8 years. Since fido is shutting down I was offered
a good deal for Robbers Ignite. After countless time on hold with various tech's (as like you my address was wrong - in my case missing apartment
number) they told me my FLOOR wasn't supported.

So floors 1-8 and 10-12 are supported, just not floor 9. The same floor
I had cable internet on for 8 years. The same floor my neighbour across
the hall from me has ignite on.

After even MORE time on hold I was able to cancel and have the bill reversed but I still don't believe that, I'm sure it will come back to bite me in
the ass when I next need credit.

Switched to Bhell fibe.... it works. $30 more a month. Even though I pay
for a fast connection downloads are much slower then they were on Fido.

THAT is totally weird! Maybe there was a physical routing
issue? They are not supposed to cross or passthru an existing
property whether it is another apartment or another building.

Switched to Bhell fibe.... it works. $30 more a month. Even though I pay for a fast connection downloads are much slower then they were on Fido.

I'm not interested in paying more. The whole "deal" for fibre
was that I would get 25Mbps unlimited UL and DL for what I am
now paying for 5Mbps unlimited DL and 1Mbps UL unlimited with
DSL, which is approx $42/mo and paid in advance for the whole
year! June 16 is the end of the current DSL contract, so I am
compelled to make some kind of decision before they auto-charge
my credit card for the DSL price.

I think I will just switch to mobile. I don't need streaming,
and I can get up to 35Mbps for less than what fibre would cost
me if I subscribe to luckymobile.ca. No wires, and I can feed
my network with a ZTE or Netgear, both 4G-capable routers.

If you don't do a whole lot that's probably the way to go for you. I
use mobile when we're in the woods and while I don't stream (much) I also
don't really watch my bandwith and I've never even come close to the
    monthly limit.

Then it was some undisclosed politics/competition/avoidance
going on? I *think* that there is something similar in my
case. The two "available" ports are probably anticipated
future connections for a new library building where that pole
is - one for the library and one for the residential units in
the planned upper floor. However.. the library/residential
building hasn't broken ground yet and it will probably take two
    yrs build.

What is your monthly limit there? Do you get a hard cut-off
    when you reach the cap?

Yea.. I don't really need the "unlimited" aspect that most
    homeowners would want.

I think it's a computer error and no one wanted to listen to me.

My limit is 8GB a month but I also have "bonus data" of 12GB total
that will automatically kick in if I ever use the 8GB. As for what
happens with the cap I have no idea. My wife is with Koodoo and I
know when she hits the cap she has no more data.

I'm with Koodo as well for my cell phone. I pay $60 /mo for 100GB of data
that can be used in both Canada & the US. With Koodo you can pick one free "perk", right now I have the "Speed Boost" perk which ups the speed throttle from "up to" 250Mb to "up to" 500Mb.

They have other perks to choose from: unlimited data (reduced speed of
512Kb once you hit your limit) & roll-over data to name a few.

Looks like Koodo's current offerings for Bring Your Own Phone are:

    $39 for 20GB (4G speed)
    $50 for 60GB (4G speed)
    $65 for 75GB (5G speed)

    4G Speed = up to 100Mb
5G Speed = up to 250Mb (or 500Mb with the 5G Speed Boost Perk)

    Luckymobile:

    $29 = 20GB (first time subcribers get 35GB/mo for 2yrs).
    $34 = 50GB
    $40 = 75GB
    $50 = 100GB
