Long stort short, we ended up chatting for about 25 minutes, and
my hands even in lined gloves were getting painful since it was
breezy and -12c, but she was passimg (trespassing?) my place on
her way home. She jogs the roads around the block and down our
private road here which she follows out to the bay and then
across the ice back to her place. As I said, it was pretty
cold today and her route is 5 km long. Something she said also
makes me think she is well into her 70's, although she obviously
looks to be in good shape.. Better than me at jogging anyways.

It's actualy pretty rare for the ice to not be snow covered and, once
snow sits on the ice for a bit, it eats into the ice a bit and it's
not very slippery at all. The couple of times I had to be careful
this year was when we had very little snow and then got rain or
freezing rain and ended up with a glassy ice surface for a few days.

freezing for the next week it looks like, a few days up between 40f
and 46f with maybe some rain.. That's pretty rare in January but this
has been a strange year from the get go..

We got a wicked rain storm 2 nights ago and lost about 80% of the
snow we had. It's mostly snowy patches around bare ground and rock
here at the moment. There will be a few cold nights over the next
week, three as low as -14c (7f) and -21c (-6f) but the daytime temps
are still going to be sitting within a few degrees of freezing..

Unfortunately that will probably mean some high winds which can
be worse than the cold.

Funny ice on the bay. That rain left a coating of water on top
of the ice a couple of inches deep in places, but then when it
dropped below freezing, rather than the water just freezing solid,
for some reason it formed a very thin layer of ice with an inch
or two of air space under it. It's strange to walk on, crunching
through that top layer to drop an inch or two and then stop..
And where did the rest of the water go?

It seemed like a thin layer of ice, maybe 1/4 inch, formed on top
of the water and then the water under that just disappeared.
It would have shown here if it had expanded higher than the depth
of the new water had been.. Maybe the water got absorbed into the
ice it was sitting on which possibly had deteriorated a bit and
had air bubbles in it.. (?)

Not much snow in my central Ontario location. But I've had my

The road that me and a neighbour pay to have plowed was done
6 times in December and 2 or 3 times so far this month, and it
starts to add up at $100 per visit..

The neighbour has a lot more plowing done on his lot than I do
and he suggested that a fair split would be for me to pay $35
of that $100 which helps me out quite a bit..

It will probably still be likely I could end up paying $500
to $600 a month myself if we get some snowy months like we
did last year. So far January has been pretty light..
