How often do you get to blast them?

...but there is no way you are going to sqeeze good quality
out of such small equipment. It is pure phisics. You cannot
produce a long sound wave if the speaker is the size of
your fist. This cuts a lot of frequencies out from the
spectrum. It is ok to have a small portable speaker for a
beach party but not as your main home sound system :-(

I would bet those people who have small-as-fist shelf speakers
don't play them very much anyway. So, they have no reason to
spend the kind of dollars for a better pair.

I took my tower Advent pair apart and mailed the woofers to a
domestic repair center that re-foamed them for me. They sound
    pretty good now.

I'm still debating getting a good subwoofer. But my amp (which
is just a receiver) doesn't have a dedicated subwoofer output.

Meanwhile the Klipsch Heresy IV are tempting!

Not very much nowadays. We used to rent them for local sport events. My father used them as his main sound system back in the day too. Now my father hardly comes home at all and I rarely use the system unless I am having a party with friends or something.

I am going to be cruel and say that what most people plays at beach parties here is pure garbage, so they spend as little as possible in speakers, because any speaker can spew garbage :-)

I don't think you need a dedicated sub for a home system unless your main speakers are lacking, and if your main speakers are lacking, what you ought to consider is chaging your main speakers instead...

Also I am a bit biased because so much people abuses subs. They raise them so much you can barely listen to the rest of the music.

Reading August's reply to You and then Your message to Him brought
memories back of the Camera Store I hung out at on Saturday mornings
in the late 1950's when I was 16 or 17 years old.

The Back part of the Camera Store was a High Fidelity Showroom with
components made by Fisher, Bogen and others.

I remember seeing a Add-On Stereo Head on a Reel to Reel Tape
Recorder, iirc it could play Staggered Stereo Tapes.
I can't remember if In-Line Stereo Heads were available back then.

They had two Electro-Voice Patrician Speaker Systems on one side of
the room that they could connect different Amplifiers to, so people
could listen to try to decide what Brand Components they were
    interested in buying.

There were other Speaker Systems in the Showroom they could use but
the E/V Patrician was the one I drooled over, and when ever someone
came for a DEMO I would wander in to listen to the demostration the
salesman was giving the prospective customers.

I tried not making a pest of myself, I just wanted to listen to STEREO.
No one ever asked me to leave the Showroom. whew

Next to one of the Patrician Cabinets was a mock up of the 30" Bass
Speaker showing how it was constructed.

In my memory it was rated from 20 to 200 CPS (Cycles Per Second) FLAT.
And that is why I came out of Lurking Mode to write this message.

Patrician's are insane. Someone in audiokarma.org is boasting
that they sold their Patrician 700's to someone in Japan for 28
    grand.

I would imagine that music takes a low level of importance at a
    beach party.

    ;)

I've heard the same argument. A sub might be a greater
improvement for an outdoor open-air concert.

Also I am a bit biased because so much people abuses subs.
They raise them so much you can barely listen to the rest
    of the music.

I've auditioned a few sub vs non-sub systems in dedicated
listening rooms at hifi shops many years ago, and came to the
conclusion that the difference was worth it.

Although my Advents are adequite for the most part, I'd really
like to stage my own listening room properly in my house and a
sub was the next step. But now I have a dream to acquire a
pair of Klipsch Heresy IV's - the audiophile commentary on them
    is excellent.

Nice story. Did you ever get a decent audiophile system of your
    own later in life?

My very first STEREO Amp used two Calrad(sp?) Mono Amplifiers that
were (each) in a EPOXY Cube with 6 wires sticking out, 2 for 6 Volt
Power, 2 for Phono Input and 2 for Speaker Output.

I built a Power Supply using an old TV Power Transformer with 4 Power Rectifiers in a Full-Wave Bridge Circuit on the Filament winding.

I had a Elsa turntable that a friend helped me put a Shure STEREO
Phono Cartridge in the Pickup Arm.

I got two 6-1/2" Speakers from Lafayette Radio Corp. that had Coaxial
    Tweeters on them.

A Heathkit AA-32 Amplifier replaced my Home Made Amp.
Later I built a Heathkit AJ-13 Stereo FM Tuner to complete my System.

When I bought the Tuner Heath Co. had a Transistorized Tuner in
Their Catalog but I wanted a Tuner with Tubes in it.
Plus the design of the Tuner Cabinet looked the same as the Amp.
    I built earlier.

I haven't turned them on for years.
The Mrs. liked the looks of a Magnavox Stereo Cabinet a friend owned
so we bought one for our living room.

Next to one of the Patrician Cabinets was a mock up of the
30" Bass Speaker showing how it was constructed.

I believe I was right saying the size of that Bass Speaker being 30",
my 1959 Allied Radio Corp. Catalog in this room didn't show a EV 30"
Speaker. Was my memory correct about that or not? Thanks.

Maybe I saw the Larger EV Speaker years later after I was Discharged
    from the Military (Navy).
I'm sure I saw a EV Patrician with that giant speaker, at least
    ED's Head [TM] says so.

That question is tricky, because I know mainly the houses in my area. There are houses here with
dinning rooms which are bigger than an appartment in Madrid or Barcelona.

Also, the room in which the pro sound system is installed is way bigger than average.
