George RR Martin released an exerpt of the upcoming conclusion
to the Song of Ice & Fire [Games of Thrones] series, The Winds
    of Winter.

I like the way he talks about what's coming:

" At Guadalajara International Book Fair 2016, Martin gave some
clues about the dark nature of The Winds of Winter: ... "I've
been telling you for 20 years that winter was coming. Winter is
the time when things die, and cold and ice and darkness fill
the world, so this is not going to be the happy feel-good that
people may be hoping for. Some of the characters [are] in very
dark places. .... Things get worse before they get better, so
things are getting worse for a lot of people. "

I have never read (nor watched) that series though I do like that the author writes his stories using WordPerfect for DOS.

I was compelled to stick to the tv series at least up to the
point to see how they rendered the dragons. I was impressed.
By then, I was invested in the storyline and decided to stay.
The world was beautifully imagined. Excellent production
    values.

Sometimes I would try to locate some of the scenes in the
books, to get "more" to the story. For instance, the scene
that depicted the murder of Lanister senior.. there was a brief
dialog with the murderer in the tv series, but the scene in the
book went into greater satisfying detail.

Wrt WP DOS, I did not know that. I liked WP 5.0 myself, back
in the day. Then the move was on to 6 and then a jump to 8:

I grew to like the WYSIWYG of the Windows version.

Once upon a time, I had version 5.0 of that around somewhere. IIRC, it
would run on my XT computer, but would not run so well under Desqview on my 386-40. :)

I bought a copy of WP 5.1 for DOS, in its original packaging with an
original license certificate, for $5 at the local Salvation Army many
years ago. Sadly all of the original packaging and documentation is
gone but I know I have a backup of the WP program around here
    somewhere.

I do have Word 5.5 for DOS and OS/2 (it's a bound executable which
means one EXE works under DOS and OS/2). It works surprisingly well
even today under DOSbox, DOSbox-X, DOSemu in Linux, and natively under
ArcaOS. Personally, I still enjoy using the command line though I wish something like tmux existed for OS/2.

I have a soft spot for old software packages. I bought 3 copies of OS/2 Warp recently because I couldn't stand to see them sitting on the shelf at a
    thrift shop.

I still have the os/2 2.1 box with floppies. My original warp 3 install
was also on floppies, but it was stolen from a friend. ;)
