I mean, if you're an American, you should know you don't need "stuff"
to celebrate the birth of our nation. Granted, I do see where he is
coming from but as a veteran, I'm just thankful that we still have a country.

I think the only thing I celebrate anymore are family
birthdays -including the horse's. This invariably includes
getting them a present. A horse birthday would not be the
same without a birthday carrot :-)
HAPPY 245TH BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!
Well, if I was to celebrate something seriously, at the very least I would lik
to have some bourbon, some BBQ material and some coal. I mean, you can have an
"intellectual" celebration by sitting on your coach and feeling well about whatever it is being celebrated, but I don.'t think it would be the same.

What makes a birthday carrot different from a regular everyday
carrot?

As a kid I remember the big deal of her turning 200. That is the first 4th of July I actually remember. At the time, I was too young to
consider that I would not likely be alive to see her turn 300, but I
feel like I have a good shot at 250. :)
I celebrated by taking a trip through mostly-rural SW Indiana. Good to see so many flags flying, and to see all the monuments in all the
little city squares were still intact and unpainted. :)

The shortage was apparently of chinese-made fireworks. If my
neighbors are any indication, the shortage was not as great as they
made it out to be on the news.

I don't know of any shortage of those but, then again, I live in the
heart of bourbon country so I don't know what it is like elsewhere. :)

Sure, I understand that. I went to a little cookout at a friend's
house and then came home at 9 PM (then stayed up until 5 AM messing
around with computers; I'll report about that in MIN_COMP). People
were shooting off artillery all around me ... drove me crazy.
I stayed home on the 4th...like you, I was up most of the night...it sounded like a war zone.
I kinda remember 200 though I was only six years old.

Yes, that's nice to see. You can see that here if you get out of the
city.

Same here. It sounded like they were shooting off dynamite and
everything else -but- fireworks around here.
There was no shortage of them shooting them off in my neighborhood, for
at least 8 hours...from way before sunset, to well after midnight. I was terrified that my lawn or roof would be set on fire from errant sparks. I
was a nervous wreck, and didn't sleep well last night as a result.
I'd rather watch the YouTube Videos of the veterans coming back home
to surprise their families or their boyfriends/girlfriends...and
especially if a marriage proposal is involved...or if they finish the
"video" with the words "Turn around"...and everyone starts crying with
joy, as their loved ones are there, in person (I was starting to cry
as I typed that).

Me, too. I am a little surprised but I don't remember July 4 before
that one. Surprised because, for years, Halloween and the 4th were my
two favorite holidays.
I also noticed it on my way back through Kentucky. The two towns I
came through both had banners up honoring their local veterans.

That first year, folks were supposedly firing the "big" fireworks off
of apartment balconies and other not-so-smart places, which is what
lead to them becoming illegal again locally.
I do get thanked quite often for my service in public (I wear a hat
that reads "US Army Veteran" and one that shows the Army Field
Artillery crossed-cannon symbol and says "ARTILLERY"). Johnson City is
more liberal and people whine when such things are celebrated but they
are celebrated ... just stay away from the ETSU campus. LOL

Tossing M80s into the front yard, were they?
I would not have thought of Johnson City as being "city" enough to
have such issues so I am sorry to hear that. Staying away from
college campuses is probably best practice. :)
Like I said, I was a little surprised not to see craters in anyone's yards.
There were a few days leading up to the 4th, and again on the 4th,
where someone close by shot off something big every night between 7pm
and 8:30pm.
Unless it is cloudy, it is not dark enough to enjoy them that early. Oddly, I did not hear anything so loud once it got dark on any of those nights???
I read some 24-year-old NHL goalie died Sunday from mishandling
fireworks.
I was trying to stuff ArcaOS on a computer that thought it knew more
than me. There were fireworks but it was my yelling. :D

If it gets worse, I'll move to Middle Tennessee. Sure, I'll have to
deal with tornadoes but after living in Texas and Oklahoma, I ain't
'fraid of no storm. LOL There's no work in Middle Tennessee but living
on Social Security, that's not an issue for me ... nor would it be one
if I was still working since I can work from home.
Fun fact: Johnson City is known as the "San Francisco of the East"
since it supposedly has the highest LBTQA population per capita in the
US besides San Francisco. It's also known as "Little Chicago" but for
a different reason altogether: Al Capone used to hang out here.

Sadly, more injuries and deaths occur by folks not using fireworks safely. I never dreamed that sparklers were so dangerous, but the
flames can reach 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Daryl Stout wrote to Sean Dennis <=-
I'm sure there are others who'd reply "Been there, done that, got the wardrobe" (never mind the T-Shirt). <G>
Daryl Stout wrote to Sean Dennis <=-
You'd be closer to me if you moved. <G> Remember, in Oklahoma, their tornadoes go to F-6. <G> Traffic though is worse in Nashville than in Little Rock.
And, I think that around New Orleans is the SF of the South. I would
NOT want to be near Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras for all the debauchery that I've heard going on.
That wasn't the case here. The guy who does my lawn said that he bought
a bunch of pyrotechnics (fireworks, firecrackers, bottle rockets, etc.), but he never set any of them off...yet added "his yard was full of debris from them".
Sparklers have magnesium in them. They're actually one of the most dangerous fireworks because they're handheld. If I do shoot off fireworks, I tend to do it in a gravelled area where I can run like
hell away from whatever it is I'm shooting off.

I've been using OS/2 since 1998; I should know better by now how cranky
it can be ... just like me.
My friend, who is a fellow disabled vet, here in town and his wife have been looking at moving to Middle Tennessee for various reasons. He
told me he's heard good things about the Cookeville VA CBOC (Community-based Outpatient Clinic). That's about a three and a half
hour drive due west of here along I-40. If I did move out there, I'd still have to come here to Johnson City, more than likely, for certain things. I would have to talk to the VA about it as I believe there is
a medical center in Nashville. The VA is very specific about where certain care can be obtained and I know people who routinely drive four
to six hours to get to the VA hospital here in Johnson City for specialized treatment.
I think a lot of that is alcohol- and drug-fueled. We have problems
with both here but not nearly at the levels that somewhere like New Orleans has.
If enough people are doing it, I don't see any reason to invest my own money when I can just sit outside and watch all theirs. :)

Too bad the red light district doesn't mean area of constant stoplights through town. <G>

I don't know that this would be any better. There are several towns,
or parts of towns, I would sure not like to have to stop too many
times. :O
I think a yellow light is on for 3 seconds, and that's it...but, I've
noted intersections where that yellow light was burned out...go figure.
Mike Powell wrote to DARYL STOUT <=-
That is not a hard and fast rule, though... I have seen some of the yellows disappear pretty quick on high-speed highways. I am guessing
that means they are not configured correctly but who knows. :)
I've heard rumors of people getting out of red light tickets because the yellow didn't last a certain length. It might be documented somewhere.
I know folks that have got out of tickets that way...
When I was learning to drive in 1989, a friend's father who was a
rather gruff individual, taught me this: "Green means go, red means
stop, yellow means go really f*cking fast!" I don't blow yellow lights
as I've seen too many accidents but if I am by myself out in the
country and the light turns yellow and there's no one waiting at the
other side of the intersection, I still stop.
