Well, if I was to celebrate something seriously, at the very least I would like to have some bourbon, some BBQ material and some coal. I mean, you can have an "intellectual" celebration by sitting on your coach and feeling well about whatever it is being celebrated, but I donñ't think it would be the same.

I think the only thing I celebrate anymore are family birthdays - including the horse's. This invariably includes getting them a present. A horse birthday would not be the same without a birthday carrot :-)

    HAPPY 245TH BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!

As a kid I remember the big deal of her turning 200. That is the first 4th
of July I actually remember. At the time, I was too young to consider that
I would not likely be alive to see her turn 300, but I feel like I have a
    good shot at 250. :)

I celebrated by taking a trip through mostly-rural SW Indiana. Good to see
so many flags flying, and to see all the monuments in all the little city squares were still intact and unpainted. :)

For starters, they don't get carrot everyday.

The birthday carrot also includes a trip to their favourite pasture. I also force myself to spend more time with them... if I have work to do I try to re-schedule for other day. I usually take a portable table and some sharpening tools to the place they are gracing around and sharpen some knives or something.

Horses never seem to be paying attention to you while they are grazing, but they actually appreciate the company. You can tell they are in a better mood.

The shortage was apparently of chinese-made fireworks. If my

There was no shortage of them shooting them off in my neighborhood, for
at least 8 hours...from way before sunset, to well after midnight. I was terrified that my lawn or roof would be set on fire from errant sparks. I
was a nervous wreck, and didn't sleep well last night as a result.

Even if you imposed a huge tax on the vendors and on the product, folks
would find a way to get the money. If your property is damaged or destroyed
by a fire started by the pyrotechnics, you have no recourse.

Never mind that folks who have PTSD, or pets who are hypersensitive to
sudden noises, are nervous wrecks. The folks who set these off are totally selfish, and have no consideration for these other individuals.

Even if there was a banishment on sale, possession, or use of them, folks would find a way to acquire them...the same with illegal drugs.

    Sean,

I mean, if you're an American, you should know you don't need "stuff"
to celebrate the birth of our nation. Granted, I do see where he is coming from but as a veteran, I'm just thankful that we still have a country.

Or as Toby Keith sang in his new song..."Happy Birthday, America -- Whatever's Left Of You". :(

He and the late Merle Haggard were right...the latter with "The
Fightin' Side Of Me". Every time I see a veteran, I make it a point
to thank them profusely for their service. My late father served in
the US Submarine Service during World War II, and retired as an E-9
Master Chief Quartermaster in 1987, 20 years before his death from
    pancreatic cancer.

I never would've passed the physical...I was born without arches
in my feet, and had poor eyesight until I was 50. The teacher in
elementary school told my parents (both dead and gone now) that "He
can't tell time"...to which my parents said "He likely can't see the
clock". Along that line, I feel naked without wearing a watch; at
least I can check the time on the cellphone.

consider that I would not likely be alive to see her turn 300, but I
feel like I have a good shot at 250. :)

I remember the American Freedom Train concluding its nationwide journey
in Miami...my family was living in the satellite community of Hialeah at
the time. Back then, the original Seaboard Coast Line depot was at Northwest 22nd Street and Northwest 7th Avenue. It was razed in the mid to late 70's,
and Amtrak's depot is now in the CSX Hialeah Yard, at Northwest 83rd Street
and Northwest 37th Avenue (Douglas Road).

The way the world is going now (the Middle East is a powder keg), I'd be
very surprised if we made it to 250. The average age of most countries and empires is between 200 and 250 years...I'm afraid America is on borrowed
    time.

I have to agree with the song "The Fightin' Side Of Me" by the late Merle Haggard (who died on his birthday), and the 3 by Toby Keith:

    1) American Soldier
    2) Courtesy Of The Red, White, And Blue
    3) Happy Birthday, America...Whatever's Left Of You (his latest).

While I wished Toby Keith hadn't used an expletive after he said "never apologize for being patriotic", what he said was basically what Merle
Haggard said in his song about America -- "if you don't love it, leave it!!".

Whenever I see a veteran, I make it a point to profusely thank them for
their service. My late father served in the US Submarine Service during
World War II, and he retired as an E-9 Master Chief Quartermaster from the Naval Reserve in 1987, 20 years before pancreatic cancer took his life. I
never would've passed the physical...I was born with no arches in my feet,

I celebrated by taking a trip through mostly-rural SW Indiana. Good to see so many flags flying, and to see all the monuments in all the
little city squares were still intact and unpainted. :)

I long for life years ago...or like with a small town where everyone knew everyone else...and folks cared about each other...never mind that "you did
not have to lock your doors at night".

I saw a YouTube video from First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida, last night...with the late Dr. W.A. Criswell, long time pastor of First Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas as guest pastor (Dr. Robert Jeffress is pastor at FBC Dallas now)...preaching on "The Old Time Religion". But, before he
got to that point, Dr. Criswell (who was nearly 90 at the time the video was made 2 years ago), noted that he could remember prices of various items growing up. Several things cost less than 50 cents!!

The cheapest I remember gasoline for was 24.9 cents a gallon at a DX gas station at Red Road (West 4th Avenue) and West 29th Street in Hialeah. A
few years later, there were "gas wars", with prices between 30 and 40 cents
a gallon. My Dad lamented "I don't know what we'll do if it gets to 40 cents
a gallon!!". What we wouldn't give for that!! Twice over the years, I've had 80 cents a gallon discount toward Kroger built up...and one time, I got gas
in Little Rock for 86 cents a gallon!! :) I remember the prices of cars on
"The Price Is Right" less than $2500. Now, they're over 10 times that!!

Locally, since there was a rumor of Kroger employees going on strike a few weeks ago, I've since switched to Valero. On Monday, if you are one of their loyalty card customers, you can get mid-grade gas at the price of regular... and high test gas for the price of mid-grade...and that can save nearly 30 cents a gallon!!

The worst part, though, was the seemingly unending barrage of fireworks, firecrackers, etc. -- for all I know, folks were firing off guns, etc.

It may be illegal to sell or set off those items in town, but folks buy
them in the county (outside the city limits), or order them online. They
have absolutely no consideration for folks who may have PTSD, or pets
who are sensitive to sudden noises. You're afraid to call or email the
police, because if these idiots find out you turned them in, they'll come
after you to injure or kill you...or they'll ransack/vandalize/burn down
your property in revenge. It sounded like a war zone here, and it went on
from 6pm to well after midnight. I was a nervous wreck, thinking my car,
lawn, or house, would be set ablaze by errant sparks, etc. -- and got very little sleep overnight as a result.

You can't ban the sale, possession, or use of them. Like illegal drugs,
folks will find some way to get them...by hook or crook. Even if you put exhorbitant taxes on the items (and to the vendors who sell them), they
would find some way to get the money to pay for them. I personally have
far better things to spend my money on.

I'd rather watch the YouTube Videos of the veterans coming back home
to surprise their families or their boyfriends/girlfriends...and
especially if a marriage proposal is involved...or if they finish the
"video" with the words "Turn around"...and everyone starts crying with
joy, as their loved ones are there, in person (I was starting to cry
    as I typed that).

For years, they were illegal here. The first year they made them legal on

are still having fun without being dangerous.

That first year, folks were supposedly firing the "big" fireworks off of apartment balconies and other not-so-smart places, which is what lead to
    them becoming illegal again locally.

Me, too. I am a little surprised but I don't remember July 4 before
that one. Surprised because, for years, Halloween and the 4th were my
    two favorite holidays.

I have never really been too much into Halloween because of my
upbringing though I do enjoy "the holidays" (Halloween, Thanksgiving,
and Christmas). I like to decorate for each holiday. I hope this year
I will be able to put a Christmas tree up in my living room window. I
have been spending my holidays alone for a long time now so I am happy
to be able to celebrate them.

I also noticed it on my way back through Kentucky. The two towns I
came through both had banners up honoring their local veterans.

I do get thanked quite often for my service in public (I wear a hat
that reads "US Army Veteran" and one that shows the Army Field
Artillery crossed-cannon symbol and says "ARTILLERY"). Johnson City is
more liberal and people whine when such things are celebrated but they
are celebrated ... just stay away from the ETSU campus. LOL

It is growing like crazy and it seems the town has turned more purple. However, as soon as you get out of Johnson City and the liberal sphere of influence (read: ETSU), it turns solidly red. That's the case with all of Tennessee. I believe only Chattanooga, Nashville, and Memphis are considered "big liberal cities". Johnson City is just full of self-important fart sniffers and pseudointellectuals. I'll pause my commentary in this echo but if you ask me, I'll talk more about it in MIN_DEBATE.

If it gets worse, I'll move to Middle Tennessee. Sure, I'll have to deal with tornadoes but after living in Texas and Oklahoma, I ain't 'fraid of no storm. LOL There's no work in Middle Tennessee but living on Social Security, that's not an issue for me ... nor would it be one if I was still working since I can work from home.

Fun fact: Johnson City is known as the "San Francisco of the East" since it supposedly has the highest LBTQA population per capita in the US besides San Francisco. It's also known as "Little Chicago" but for a different reason altogether: Al Capone used to hang out here.

    Mike,

There were a few days leading up to the 4th, and again on the 4th,
where someone close by shot off something big every night between 7pm
    and 8:30pm.

On the 4th, they must've shot them off for 8 hours...began well before sunset, and lasted well after midnight.

Unless it is cloudy, it is not dark enough to enjoy them that early. Oddly, I did not hear anything so loud once it got dark on any of those nights???

That wasn't the case here. The guy who does my lawn said that he bought
a bunch of pyrotechnics (fireworks, firecrackers, bottle rockets, etc.), but
he never set any of them off...yet added "his yard was full of debris from them".

Here it seems to depend on what the speed limit is, too. If it is a 55 MPH highway, the yellows seem to last longer than on a 20 MPH city street.

That is not a hard and fast rule, though... I have seen some of the yellows disappear pretty quick on high-speed highways. I am guessing that means

I've heard rumors of people getting out of red light tickets because the yellow didn't last a certain length. It might be documented somewhere.

That's certainly true in my neck of the woods.

In AU, the rule of the yellow light is that you must stop if it is safe to do so.

So if you are travelling at 100k/h, you need more distance to stop safely, vs travelling at 40k/h. So the traffic light needs to last longer on yellow for 100k/h vs 40k/h.

If it doesnt last long enough, resulting in you travelling through the intersection on a red light and get a ticket, if you can demonstrate that the yellow light doesnt last long enough for you travelling at the published speed to stop safely in time, you dont pay the ticket.

I know folks that have got out of tickets that way...
