    Hi everyone,

Last Tuesday afternoon during my weekly Walmart run, my Pathfinder caught
on fire while was driving due to an unknown electrical problem involving my transmission. I parked in a safe spot, ran like hell, and called 911. Five minutes later, Pathy was destroyed. I've since signed the title over to the towing company to get crushed. Learned my lesson about not having comprehensive coverage on my vehicles.

I got out unscathed and the fire was stopped before it could get to my
mobility scooter on its lift. The scooter and lift are fine and were recovered.

I did buy a 1991 Chevy S10 from a friend on a whim. Glad I did. It needs
some minor work (I hope it's minor) and I'll be on the road again. I added comprehensive coverage and rental car coverage to my insurance policy
    today...

    Hello digimaus!

Last Tuesday afternoon during my weekly Walmart run, my Pathfinder caught on fire while was driving due to an unknown electrical problem involving
    my transmission.

    What year was the vehicle?

"Nissan recalls nearly 20,000 vehicles in Canada over fire
    risks
    By Staff The Associated Press

    Updated September 20, 2018 3:12 pm

"DETROIT - Nissan recalled nearly 240,000 cars and SUVs worldwide due to a fire risk and is advising people to park the vehicles outdoors in rare cases.

"An anti-lock brake pump can leak brake fluid onto a circuit board, causing an electrical short and increasing the fire risk, according to the company. If drivers see the anti-lock brake warning lamp for more than 10 seconds after starting the engine, Nissan urges them not to drive the vehicles and park them outdoors and away from structures or other vehicles.

"The recall covers certain 2015 to 2017 Nissan Murano, 2016 and 2017 Nissan Maxima, 2017 through 2018 Nissan Pathfinder and 2017 Infiniti QX60 vehicles.

"A spokesperson told Global News there were 19,761 affected vehicles in Canada.

"Nissan estimates 56 per cent of the vehicles have the problem, which has been traced to faulty seals in the pump.
    Story continues below advertisement

"Some Muranos were recalled for the same problem in 2016.

"Documents posted Thursday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration don't say if there have been any fires. Nissan spokesman Steve Yaeger said Thursday he's checking to see if any fires have occurred. He said there have been no related crashes or injuries.

"The company is asking owners to park the vehicles outside if the anti-lock brake light stays on "out of an abundance of caution" Yaeger said in an email. If the light stays on, owners should contact Nissan or Infiniti to have the vehicle towed to a dealer, he said.

"Dealers will inspect the pump serial numbers and replace them if necessary starting Oct. 15.

"Most of the recalled vehicles are in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

And in an NPR article later in 2019 ups the recall count to
400,000 vehicles in the USA alone:

"Nissan Is Recalling Nearly 400,000 Vehicles Over Potential Fire Hazard November 15, 20194:40 PM ET

    By

    Paolo Zialcita

"Nissan is recalling nearly 400,000 vehicles in the U.S.
because of a braking system defect that could cause them to
catch fire. Owners are advised to park affected vehicles
outside and away from structures if the anti-lock brake system
warning light comes on for more than 10 seconds.

"The Japanese automaker says a pump seal may become worn down
and cause brake fluid to leak. "If the warning is ignored ...
the brake fluid leak may potentially create an electrical short
in the actuator circuit, which in rare instances, may lead to a
fire," the company says in documents sent to the National
    Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The recall affects four different models in the U.S.: the
Nissan Murano SUV, model years 2015 to 2018; Maxima sedans,
model years 2016 to 2018; and the Infiniti QX60 and Nissan
Pathfinder SUVs, model years 2017 to 2019.

So.. did your Pathfinder fit into that year range?

    Hello digimaus!

Last Tuesday afternoon during my weekly Walmart run, my Pathfinder caught on fire while was driving due to an unknown electrical problem involving
    my transmission.

What were the first signs of problems? Fire in the
    transmission sounds weird.

..Learned my lesson about not having comprehensive coverage
    on my vehicles.

Oh.. so THAT's what comprehensive is for. I was thinking of
taking it OFF my 16 yr old Rav4.

I got out unscathed and the fire was stopped before it
could get to my mobility scooter on its lift. The scooter
and lift are fine and were recovered.

The pics are amazing. It seems that the fire had a long time
to burn. The external "lift" for your scooter looks
    interesting.

Comprehensive covers losses from causes other than collisions, such as theft, fire, flood, weather, etc. Normally the premium for this coverage is fairly low.

In areas that are served by volunteer fire departments, it can take a few minutes to get an engine staffed and responding to the call.

It ws a 1995. No ABS, no airbags.

It was determined that it was a short in the transmission's external control systems (solenoids, et cetera) that caused the fire. The Pathfinder sat for over teo years in my parents' "back 40" and all we can figure is some critter ate through some wiring and it shorted out against the transmission's bell housing.

No, the fire lasted less than five minutes.

My lift is made by Harmar. They're unique as the floor plate hsa "stars and bars", emblematic of the US flag, stamped out of it. You can always tell a veteran that way.

Wow, if this was an RPG I would think somebody cast a curse on your car.

Good thing you made it out XD

I got out alive and I DO have another car...so besides my stupidity of not having the right insurance and losing all the money I put into the Pathfinder, I'm breaking even.

    Glad you're OK!

    Me too.
