The Spanish's army outdoor suites all go with suspenders for that reason.

I use such outdoor suite when doing barn work in Winter because it is so much better
than a belt. Then, I still need a belt to carry my machete.

I use a pair of beltbro belts. (www.beltbro.com). Much more comfy
then a normal belt as it doesn't push against the stomach when sitting
in a car for 8 hours at a time like I do.

If I was carrying a pistol I'd still have to wear a belt also but the suspenders really work to keep the ol' pantalones up for me. <G>

I'll have to look into those belts as that's the same reason I hate
belts. I am hoping that I will start to lose weight soon when I can
    move around again.

I prefer them even when walking around, but as I said especially when
at work stuck in a car / van for 8+ hours.

    A clever idea.

Looks like a set of standard velcro strips from the dollar
store could accomplish the same thing.

Maybe contributing less to stomach growth is another approach!

I know people who can hide behind a telphone pole that prefer
suspenders. I think it's a comfort thing, not a weight thing. I hated
belts even when I could fit into a size 28 pants.

My wife bought me some a few years back, but it would be difficult to wear them as I wear a T-shirt with a button-up shirt over it with the tail hanging out. It's amazing what you can conceal under there.

THe problem with pistols is that they are bad for cutting rope or making a "sammic"

Actually I have tried arrangements to carry the machete with no belt, some of which I have found in old army manuals. THe issue is the machete is actually a small sword rather than a knife, heh.
