i hate moving. especially because i have a fishtank and other pets.

Oh god yes, I used to have aquariums and they were such a pain to move.
I want to get one (or more) again, but waiting till I find a place I
plan to stay at for awhile.

I pay people. Then again, I haven't moved since 2003 when I bought my current house. I did move some items from Southern California to
Colorado and that put me back $2000. Sadly, they are still missing one
    of my couches. LOL

That is my plan for my next move. I moved myself (with help from a few
friends) and it took me a week to recover. Any future moves will use a
moving service (as long as I can afford it).

My wife wants to build a new house. Her current position is that we "de-clutter" the current house to the point where we limit our move. We're going on almost a year and there's been very little movement in the "de-clutter" but she has definitely found more storage to put "clutter" onto. I give up.

i only have one 35gal hex aquarium now, but moving it was difficult and some fish died from stress. it's hard to drain it, it's hard to collect the fish, and it's hard to relocate it. i used to have this fishtank and then several 5, 10, 20 gal tanks on racks that i kept beta fish in, with special lighting and that was cool. at that point it looked like i was running a fish store.

well like i said before, i used that tub method so that made it easy for most things. other things i wrapped in shrink wrap or blankets [big tvs or monitors]. i had access to all the packing material i wanted, so that was good.

i also bought a convertable dolly that has like 4 positions. it'll be cart, or dolly or go on other angles. that thing is pretty cool.

you do need another person, though.

just rent a trash bin and put it in the driveway.
it's a great way to get rid of stuff inside and in the garage.

Yes, it is tough for some people to get rid of things. I am like that.
I have to ask myself "will you actually ever use it?" if not, take a
photo of it if I want to "see" it, otherwise, sell or toss it.

And now that I am older and spend more time at home, maybe I will try

i used to have volcanic substrate and plants and grow lights and it looked great, but it all died off. also the damn fish probably ate the plants.

My son is 18, looking to move out, and needed a car to commute to school. His mom has a F150 and a Buick, and he suggested that maybe he'd ask his mom for the truck.

I mentioned to him that at his stage in life, if he bought a truck, he'd spend every weekend helping friends move.

    He got the Buick.

Back in 1998, my wife and I bought a brand new truck. Yes, people "needed" it to move their stuff, haul trash, etc. While my wife and I were on our honeymoon, May 1999, my wife's sister, who is an unlicensed and uninsured driver, "borrowed" the truck to run to McDonalds. She ran it up a curb and into a really big tree. The truck was, for all intents and purposes, dead. She lived. Wife was pissed. That was our last truck until 4 weeks ago when I bought a new one. My oldest daughter (27) asked me if I'd move some stuff for her. I said...

    Yes. I said yes.

    I'm an idiot.

we have home improvement stores near us that rent trucks real cheap. especially if you only need it for 1-2 hrs. tell them to do taht.

Oh, moving a fish tank would be a wet, soggy mess. How long can fish live in plastic bags?

I use 5 gal buckets and i use the fishtank water.
it's extremely stressful and fish die from stress.

I think a 1hr-2hr window is best for taking them out, moving the tank and then setting up again.

My wife has lived in Canada and England and has an English passport, we're thinking about a quiet little country town in England, Wales or Scotland.
Far enough away from London that the real estate is cheap, no property tax
to speak of, and a national health service.

As you get older, you get bigger TVs that you're less able to move on your own. It's insidious.

As a twenty-something, I could have moved my current 60" flat screen by myself. Now, I could manage that 13" black and white TV I had when I was twenty.

We're going on almost a year and there's been very little movement in
the "de-clutter" but she has definitely found more storage to put "clutter" onto. I give up.

I'm a firm believer in decluttering instead of paying to move crap that will stay in the box you moved it in. I've done that more times that I'd like to count.

I've used a clutter expert in the past - she was pricey, but well worth it.
We had a 2 car garage full of stuff. Part of the process was to take *everything* out of the garage. This is important.

Once it's out, you need to decide whether or not it's important to keep. There's lots of criteria you could use. Everything that went back in went
into a specific place, so we had a place for outdoor gear, a place for extra dishes/flatware/party/holiday stuff, computer gear, tools, kids toys,
    seasonal clothes, etc.

Roughly 1/3 of the stuff went into a dumpster, 1/3 was donated, and 1/3 went back in. When it went back in (see the previous paragraph) everything had
a place, we knew what we had and didn't have (so no buying to replace things you can't find) and it stayed organized.

We have a storage space in our current house that's the length of the house, about 10 feet deep, 60 feet wide and with a sloping ceiling that's 4 feet in the back and 7 in the front. It's full of stuff, and we've gotten rodents in there. I need to empty it out, find the holes, plug them up, then drywall
    and finish the space.

I'm expecting 1/3 of the current contents will go back.
