I ran it for a long time--I wrote the original documentation on how to get Telegard/2 running under OS/2 and I am credited in the documentation as hausmaus--but its lack of support for *.MSG just because Tim had a hair up his ass about the format made it a royal pain for me to use with IBBS games and having to convert *.MSG-formatted netmail to Squish-formatted netmail was really a waste of time.

There were other bugs in it that irritated me so I quit using it though if Tim had followed through with its development (and added *.MSG support), I might still be using it.

Back in the day, I used to have to use confmail to toss fido packets to
*.msg files in separate directories per echomail area, then run Telegard's tosser to import the messages into Telegard. A total pain in the ass on a 8 mhz AT with 2 30mb drives.

I did love Telegard back then, except for the fact that when it crashed it'd eat the user data file.

No, he was a great programmer. TG was written in Pascal, C, and assembler. Tim had other priorities though. I once called him at work which surprised
the hell out of him. I asked about buying the TG code and he gave me a huge line of bullshit about copyrights, this, that and the other -- anything he could think of to try to get me off the phone.

What had really happened is that he lost the source code to TG and didn't
want to admit it, that's all.

I don't know if you know the VADV roland de graff story, but bryan turner told me that Roland only keep the source code to vadv on ONE computer and he did not back it up. when the harddrive failed he picked up the computer and threw it on the floor out of frustration. i guess he didn't think of using harddrive recover experts.

I was told the same story by a sysop who knows/knew Roland personally. That would have been absolutely maddening. With Cheepware, I keep backups both on and offline. I need to upload the latest source code for the doors to my Sourceforge repo eventually.

Right now, I simply do not have enough physical space for all the backups I need, especially for the BBS, but hopefully, if Social Security comes through, I can scrape up enough to set up a NAS for hot backups here. I'll probably set up AWS S3 for warm backups. Once I can meet Nick up in Niagra Falls, I can get a LTO-4 drive from him for cold backups stored in a storage room.

It's not "fancy shit". It's having multiple backup options in case a backup fails (which happens). You forget that I did this for a living and for me, it's not anything out of the ordinary.

i'm not saying that you cant do it. i'm saying that the likely hood that you WON'T do it arrises when you get complicated with it. my backups are easy and get done. i've heard people talk about complicated backup schemes but they end up not having the backups.

Using s3cmd is quite easy. Tape backups are easy also due to a plethora of great backup software available under Linux though I could just as easily use tar to do it (after all, tar stands for "Tape ARchiver"). For me, it is not complicated. It's just not having the money to pay for space.

you dont need to pay for a lot of space if you dont back up the entire planet. just back up what you need, delete old backups.

the point is that you do it. a lot of people talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.

    Hahahahaha, so true.

If you have a complex backup system you really need to automate it.

When I only had 2 Tb of personal data to backup I had a very simple
    backup policy:

    1) Checksum all the files and compare the results to the last known good checksums (because backing up corrupt data is not good).

    2) Rsync the files to a external drive. I used the hard-links trick to have weekly "snapshots" to roll back to if need be.

    3) The external drive was moved offsite the next day and another drive was brought in (I actually used two drives which I rotated offsite-insite).

Nowadays that won't do, so I have turned two old workstations into makeshift NAS servers and I just dump to both monthly (unless there are critical changes I want to register to backup, in which case I trigger a manual backup).

BackBlaze used to offer unlimited storage plans for backups for all mainstream Operating Systems but Linux.

The reason was quite interesting. BackBlaze actually had created working agents and clients for Linux which were known to work properly. However, market analisys showed that a regular computer user didn't have many files to backup at all, so your average Windowser would upload a bunch of files to his unlimited storage and call it a day. Meanwhile, the average Linux user had more than 1 TB of data on whis workstation and typically wanted to backup a whole image of everything. Since the company started losing money after 1 Tb of storage was used up, it was not profitable to keep Linux users in unlimited tiers, which is the reason why Linux and BSD were supported only on business plans.

My point is that we microchip heads tend to hoard big ammounts of data and want to include most of it in our backup policies.

It's going on two years now. However, my lawyers tell me that if I lose th appeal, they will have the case brought up before an administrative law jud in a nearby city. That's how my dad finally received his benefits.

Yeah we had to go to court as well. Such bullshit, mainly becuase my wife is only 37. The hearing took all over 3 minutes after they looked over her medical records.

Yeah, Thomas Kloos is shutting his WINServer system down so I am in
need of another Fido feed -- again. Though he SAYS he MIGHT be going
over to Mystic -- mainly because it seems that Hector Santos has gone
MIA now for some reason as the only tweets he seems to be posting on
their twitter account is about Will Smith.

Is Thomas your local net feed?

You are welcome to get Fido echos here, although I don't run WINServer,
    if that makes a difference.

Yeah, looks like Fido is flowing through both of my systems just fine
now :) Thank you for your help.
