Hi,

I made some "big" changes to my BBS(s) setup here at Razor's Domain.

I had a Mystic BBS running on a Pi as my main bbs that was fun for
awhile, but I got to the point that I never checked it, rarely read the
echos and it just sat there tossing networks to my telegard point
setup.

So yesterday and today I went through the process of dropping several
networks that really were not of much use to me and moved the networks
I was keeping (Micronet, Fidonet, Retronet??) to the TG machine (where
as before it was just a point).

That seems to have gone smoothly and only took an hour or so.

Speaking of Retronet, anyone on that network still have a connection?
When I moved it to TG, I noticed I could not get a connect to Carlos's
machine. And then I looked on the Mystic BBS and the last message I had
in that network was Feb 2021. So I guess it's been down since then?
That was one of the networks I wanted to keep because it did have some
good traffic on it.

BBSing is so much fun.....

It does on occasion get some traffic. Enough that I keep it as well.

have been averaging one new message a week across all the echos since

Drive and 300 Baud VIC Modem.

Later someone I met told me the phone number for a local BBS for the
Commodore Computers and I began calling it.

I had already been using some Amateur Radio BBS's and was glad to
learn about the Dial-Up C= BBS because I needed to learn about
"this here" computer stuff from other BBS Users, and hear about
the things they experienced and to ask them questions about how
to do things with my computer.

My thoughts were a BBS was sorta like the Amateur Radio Club
Meetings I attended back when I got my Novice License in 1958.
I could talk with other Ham Operators there to learn enough about
Radio stuff so to be able to know enough to pass the F.C.C. Test for
a higher Class Operators License.

In a Computer Store I picked up a FREE Newletter and saw a List of
Dial-Up BBS's and called one of them that had Topics about DOS and
Windows so I could learn about those OS's.

The BBS was called The Volunteer BBS and was part of The GT Power BBS
Network.

There were messages from people in the USA, England and Taiwan on
that BBS, and after reading many, many messages I decided to jump in
and write a message, and here I are, still lurking and writing
occasionally.

As much as I try, I'll never become a Mister Know-It-All, even tho I
act like it sometimes.

Summer has kicked into high gear here, with isolated thunderstorms, heat,
and humidity. Heat Advisories are likely this weekend into next week, but
our hottest part of the year is early to mid-August, anyway.

My first computer was a Radio Shack TRS-80 MC-10 Micro Color Computer.
It had a 16K RAM Expansion pack (the default was 4K), which plugged into
the back of the keyboard...you used a TV set for a monitor, and programs
were saved and loaded on cassette tape. The printers for it were very small...one was a thermal paper printer, and the other was 4 colors, but
it was noisy when it printed, compared to the thermal paper printer. I
also had a 300 baud modem, with a switch in 3 positions...Originate,
Answer, and OFF. You would dial the phone number first (manually), then
when you heard the modem squeal, you'd move the switch to ORIGINATE,
and hang up the phone. I did my early days with CompuServe on that
computer.

Later someone I met told me the phone number for a local BBS for the Commodore Computers and I began calling it.

I think the BBS stuff started on a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100 laptop.
I found a program that'd allow Xmodem file transfers, and I had a 2400
baud modem at the time. A companion program also made the font smaller,
but easier to work with (the default was 40 characters per line).

I had already been using some Amateur Radio BBS's and was glad to
learn about the Dial-Up C= BBS because I needed to learn about
"this here" computer stuff from other BBS Users, and hear about
the things they experienced and to ask them questions about how
to do things with my computer.

I have a bulletin on my BBS of all the Arkansas BBS's (most in the
central part of the state) that went offline long ago. Admittedly, it
brings back memories.

My thoughts were a BBS was sorta like the Amateur Radio Club

But, I also exported it to ascii text, for 2 of the ham radio doors I
have online. It took much of the day to go through to format the file
to under 78 characters per line.

With degenerative disk disease in my back and spine, it's hard to sit
at the computer, or stand for a long time. Getting old is not for sissies,
and the ONLY golden thing about "the golden years" is the color of your
urine.

You get used to it. We're used to the fact I will randomly drop or
throw things. Just clean it up and move on with life. Guitars are
hidden under the bed so I don't see them. For the rest of it, when
my hands don't work they don't work. Sometimes I have to use the
food processor to cut onions, other days I can use a knife.

to be a fine communications medium to stir up a "live" chat
with someone at any time of the day.

OS's.

My first real awareness of BBSes to call in my local area was
courtesy of Boardwatch magazine. Then, it was a matter of
getting a good LD plan to check out some of the ones farther
away. A little later, I gravitated towards Compuserve.

There were messages from people in the USA, England and
Taiwan on that BBS, and after reading many, many messages
I decided to jump in and write a message, and here I are,
still lurking and writing occasionally.

You are less of a lurker than others. ;)

When I signed up to ICQ I had a 5 digit ICQ number but then ended up forgetting my password to it, when I signed back up I was issued a 6 digit number, which was kind of a bummer.

You know, I worked in a computer store and never thought to try and advertise there. I don't really remember how I first came to learn about BBS's though, just that the first board I dialed into was Prime Time BBS in Gravenhurst, Ontario which was a multi-line PCBoard BBS.

There were a couple of boards one town over in Huntsville which was still long distance back then. Someone started a service where you could dial a local number to a town in between the two, listen to a short advertisement and then get a dialtone to call into Huntsville as a local call.

It was in the latter stage of BBS'ing when my family got London Telecom and I was able to dial long distance BBS's more often, one of my favourites was run by a nice fellow named Shawn Highfield... ;)

At the last License Exam I took, a F.C.C. Employee was there.

I can't remember what the local newsletter I found the BBS List in

Later I called The PRISM BBS and began reading FIDO BBS messages.
And also Mike Powell's BBS with a Railroad Train name that I can't
recall, until He moved to Frankfort, Kentucky out of my local dial-up
calling area.

I 'think' Mike's BBS was named The Pan-Am BBS, was that guess close
enuf?

After I retired a friend paid for a few months for a Dial-Up Internet
Service until they moved away, then I paid for it just a few months
more and then quit paying the monthly fee and went "cold turkey"
i.e. No BBS access for a while.

I learned about JUNO Email either just a little earlier than getting
the Dial-Up ISP Account or maybe it was some time later I learned about
JUNO, but I really liked having a Free Email Account and used it until
JUNO quit Dial-In access.

So after awhile I had DSL added to my Telephone Bill and Resubscribed
to Mike's BBS now called The Capital City BBS.

Band Radio, building Heathkits, using The Online Bible on the pc.

issued a 6 digit number, which was kind of a bummer.

I still remember my ICQ user number: 19965647.

It's been years since I fired up ICQ but I enjoyed it until it got
bought out.

In a Computer Store I picked up a FREE Newletter and saw a
List of Dial-Up BBS's and called one of them that had
Topics about DOS and Windows so I could learn about those
OS's.

My first real awareness of BBSes to call in my local area was
courtesy of Boardwatch magazine. Then, it was a matter of
getting a good LD plan to check out some of the ones farther
away. A little later, I gravitated towards Compuserve.

Someone told me a Phone Number I could call Compuserve for free
to see what Compuserve had on it.
I called it once or maybe twice to try it out but I wasn't interested
in getting a paid account on it, or AOL for that matter.

There was one Dial-Up BBS's I called once called D.I.S.K. that
asked me to Pay if I wanted to use it after the Trial Call.
When I tried it out I got confused when all of a sudden another User
on the System (not the SysOp) started typing TO ME.
I didn't know others were notified when I logged on that system.

I like QWK because I'm in my own little world when I'm Reading,
Writing or Writing a Reply.

There were messages from people in the USA, England and
Taiwan on that BBS, and after reading many, many messages
I decided to jump in and write a message, and here I are,
still lurking and writing occasionally.

You are less of a lurker than others. ;)

I read/lurk many Echos on this BBS, I just jump in and out at times.

I /think/ mine was 3231258.

You know, I worked in a computer store and never thought to try and advertise there. I don't really remember how I first came to learn
about BBS's though, just that the first board I dialed into was Prime
Time BBS in Gravenhurst, Ontario which was a multi-line PCBoard BBS.

The computer store in town here always had a list of BBSes. One of the
first I called was "The Red Baron BBS".

could dial a local number to a town in between the two, listen to a
short advertisement and then get a dialtone to call into Huntsville as
a local call.

I used to have a phone in my friends house in Ajax that would foward me to
the ISP in Toronto. That's how I initially brought the internet to my BBS. First UUCP, then a dedicated connection at 33.6, and after that ISDN. By
that point I had switched to running the ISP and sold it shortly after that.

It was in the latter stage of BBS'ing when my family got London Telecom and I was able to dial long distance BBS's more often, one of my favourites was run by a nice fellow named Shawn Highfield... ;)

They're two separate technologies. ICQ is instant messaging while
USENET is newsgroups.
