I'm tempted to move from Synchronet's mailer and filefix programs back to Allfix and Radius. Am I crazy?

I like the idea of running a BBS, mailer, tosser and areafix/filefix in one place, but filefix is a little rudimentary, and I miss having a graphical view of my outboxes with Radius.

I'd be trading currently supported programs for programs that are abandonware or maintenance-only, at best - and lose some of the integration I have, like having passwords in one place.

I'd also lose the ability to move from Windows to Linux at some point, which was a driving force in moving away from Radius/Allfix.

I went back to my OS/2 setup because if the mail goes down, the BBS doesn't. and vice versa. I just didn't like having a monolithic system. I guess too many years of "separate but together" got to me. ALLFIX will be good once I get it set up. It will add a lot of functionality to my system.

I miss the functionality of Allfix (like supporting passthrough areas and reporting) but on my older XP systems I'd have a memory issue where it'd just hang, or pretend to run and then nothing would happen. I'm on Windows 10/32, maybe it might work on a newer OS.

As a RC/NC, it's nice to be able to route mail on the fly and see who has mail backed up. That's another thing I miss about the old setup.

I could use that here for a ZC too though my hubs are blessedly reliable. My experience as R11C taught me a thing or two. LOL

I just came off of a stint of going back to Telegard/Allfix/FastEcho (my NUC died) - one thing to keep in mind is Allfix only seems to support 8.3 filenames.

Some of the ANSI packs that fsxNet sends out now & then have modern long filenames, the .TIC file would reference a filename like "sup3rawes0mel33tansi.zip" and Allfix would say the file is missing because all it sees is SUP3RA~1.ZIP.

Not sure how many long filenames pass through your system, but something to at least consider.

It annoys the hell out of me when someone uses a LFN to hatch out a program considering many of the systems do not support LFN. Mine does, being that it's OS/2 using IBM's JFS for its filesystem, but it's a courtesy to use 8.3 for the myriad (and majority) of systems that cannot support LFN.

I don't know if it's a lack of courtesy or a lack of awareness and common sense in today's sysops (probably the latter). You cannot assume anything in BBSing anymore.

As it's been said: the nice thing about standards is that there's so many to choose from.
