I recommend you using the SSD as the system drive and the HDD as the data drive. This configuration will be more long-lived and reliable.

PS: Keep in mind that XP does not know how to properly work with SSD. You need to use at least Win7.

I recommend you using the SSD as the system drive and the
HDD as the data drive. This configuration will be more
long-lived and reliable.

The T60 affords operating a 2nd'ary drive in lieu of the DVD
drive. But at this point, I am enamoured to reduce heat
generation, associated fan noise, and any hdd noise and just
migrate to SSD ..and I want to retain use of the DVDRW drive
for certain occassions.

A direct SSD migration seems simpler to achieve.

The HDD+SSD project sounds more time consuming.

PS: Keep in mind that XP does not know how to properly work with SSD. You need to use at least Win7.

What is "proper"? Are you referring to TRIM and what is also
referred to as Garbage Collection?

XP doesn't entertain extra background disk activity like the
later OSes do. It is my understanding that with properly
adjusted (aligned) partitions, the SSD should have very few
issues operating without TRIM.

Usually it is enough to save the configuration files.

For a desktop computer, this is a reasonable solution. For a laptop - only if there is an M2 slot, or you don't need DVD anymore.

Meanwhile, the colder your drive is, the longer it will live. I try not to warm my drives over 35°C.

Yes.. the Thinkpad T60 is kinda like that! But it isn't
designed to hurt anyone. ;)

The HDD+SSD project sounds more time consuming.

For a desktop computer, this is a reasonable solution. For a laptop -
only if there is an M2 slot, or you don't need DVD anymore.

I do have a couple of desktops that might benefit from such a
combination. For now, I decided to order a dedicated external
4TB HDD device for incrementals and/or images.

My reading of TRIM is that it is beneficial only because Win7
and up conduct vast amounts of continuous disk activity far and
above what XP with normal user activity might do.

Anyway.. I'm also reading that with proper "alignment" of the
SSD, and with sufficient unused space on the SSD, lack of TRIM
won't be an issue. In fact, by the time I settle down with the
new installation, I might consider upgrading to Win7/32, albiet
limited to the maxed 3GB RAM on the T60.

I won't argue.

I will report! The SSD should arrive on Friday. I just forgot
to order an external USB/SATA connector. So.. the initial
cloning won't occur until about a week later now.

But I did a Cleanup and Defrag before that.

Now the T60 seems noticeably faster too. The defrag was
probably the most salient issue. I don't recall the last time
I even bothered to check defrag of the smaller C: partition.

The H: partition had no CHKDSK errors at all.
