Areas affected...portions of southern Virginia
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 318...
Valid 162049Z - 162145Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 318
continues.
SUMMARY...The severe threat will continue across Severe Thunderstorm
Watch 318 until storms move offshore. Damaging gusts and large hail
remain the primary threats.
DISCUSSION...Multiple transient supercells, with a history of severe
hail and damaging gusts, have recently merged into multiple
multicellular complexes. These multicell-complexes share a cold pool
which is surging toward the VA/NC border per recent scans of the
KAKQ radar at 0.5 degree elevation. As such, these outflow-dominant
storms may continue producing strong wind gusts and perhaps an
instance or two of large hail before moving offshore.=20
Farther to the northwest, weaker and more isolated storms will move
into northwestern portions of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 318.
Questions remain regarding how strong these storms will ultimately
become given the overturned airmass left behind by the earlier
storms. As such, the greatest severe threat within the watch appears
to be across southern Virginia with the ongoing multicellular
complexes.
