• Star Trek II: Death of Khan?

From Chris Krascek@2:250/5 to All on Sun Jun 20 22:19:38 2021
I think we can all agree that Star Trek II was a great story... but I had one of those 'what if' moments.

Recall-- Kirk and the Enterprise are investigating the Reliant. No reply on the comm. Savik starts quoting regulation about what should happen when communication has not been established. Spock shushes her.

How do you think things would have played out if Kirk raised the shields before the Reliant could attack?
Further, while they are closely matched in fire power, Kirk still has the ace of taking control of Reliant and dropping shields.

It kind of makes me think how Khan, being of superior intellect would have reacted.

Has anyone thought of the possible outcomes here?

A Miranda class is nowhere near the same league as a Constitution. In a straight up fight with all other factors being equal, the Connie wipes the floor with the Miranda every day of the week, even with a trainee crew. It's one of the things I like most about WOK - the baddie doesn't have a bigger badder ship.

It kind of makes me think how Khan, being of superior intellect would have reacted.

I would imagine some level of ruse would have been concocted along the lines of requesting assistance with a repair team to fix comms or similar - requiring the lowering of shields for transport. There's any number of ways Kirk and co. could have been baited into dropping shields, just the way it happened allowed another element of storytelling with regards to where Kirk's character was at.

    Hello,
I agree, The Reliant was a Science Vessel and i think the Miranda Class was older than the Consitution Class. It kind of makes me think of a Navy Frigate vs a Destroyer in modern times. Both have a good punch but the Destroyer will win.
It is awesome to find some Trekkies on here!!!! I have a question. What is everyone's favorite series? I find it hard to pick one. I have liked all of them.. If i had to choose, i would say DS9 or Voyager. I kind of go to those because of the story arcs but the Next Generation is also great!!!.

I loved ST:TNG when I was younger, and while I still like it, my
favorite later on became ST:Voyager with ST:DS9 in a strong second. It's
funny that I like DS9 so much because when it was originally aired I
didn't really watch it. I thought it was boring. I liked the adventures
of space ships flying through space, not some station sitting stationery
in the same spot. But, I love it now.

I also did not watch ST:Enterprise until long after it was canceled. I
like it, but I still do not appreciate all the pre-quel shows very much.
Star Trek has always been about the future to me and I like to see what
else we can explore in this universe the further out we go.

I loved the story arcs in DS9, and because they weren't dealing with an alien-of-the-week, we got a lot more character development.

And some amazing acting from Andrew Robinson, Aron Eisenberg and Avery
    Brooks, to name others.

I was struck by how Aron Eisenberg had taken a minor character with Nog and made a character and a story that resonated with the viewers.

Watching Nog plead with Sisko to get into Starfleet, Treachery, Faith and
the Great River, going into battle and recuperating at Vic's was a great
story arc that set a minor character into Star Trek lore.

And, I could re-watch "In the Pale Moonlight", "Far Beyond the Stars" and
    "The Wire" repeatedly.

Okay, I thought Avery Brooks was the WORST actor on DS9. I don't
understand why so many though he was great. ??? Oh well, I'm okay with
    it. <haha>

I thought all the other actors did great. Just not a fan of the

I watch DS9 and Voyager repeatedly - usually at bedtime because they
both have a steady rythm to them that work for me to get to sleep. No,
I'm not saying they are boring. The other factor that allows me to fall
asleep to them is that I have seen all the episodes so many times that I
don't feel like I'm going to miss something if I fall asleep. <hahaha>

fair point. WOK is somewhat a bit of an underdog story in that regard. Good thing Kirks quick thinking and action against an adversary that took him off guard compensates for his silly mistake.

I don't know. With Spock scanning, he's bound to pick up that they are lying. They tried to say the the coils were overloading.

Either way, it was a great story but I felt that everything that made Khan a great character in TOS space seed wasn't explored enough in WOC. I did however, enjoy the moby dick parable to it.

While each has it's place and carries the adventure and science that we all love, TNG is probably my favorite series. Followed by Voyager and DS9. Great stories and characters mixed with themes of science.

    Hello,
I also like TNG as well. TNG is very important as this is the series that opened Trek up to what it is now. If I am looking to just relax and watch a single episode, TNG is often the best choice. Episodes often have a single story that doesnt arc into different episodes. I like story arcs but episodes with no arc is also good. The new Star Trek show with Captain Pike that is in development is supposed to go back to this format.

    Hello,

what i really like about TNG are the first few episodes where there is some
TOS feeling around. In this early episodes not everything is so polished like in later seasons and everything looks a lot more... cheaper made perhaps?

Even if its not as much appreciated: I like Discovery (the second season) too... especially the first episode of the second season has a great, optimistic and energetic feeling due to Cpt. Pike in contrast to the darker first season.

    Greetings from germany

yeah agreed! TNG I think is balanced. Story, characters.. theres nothing about it that I hate... Wesley? LOL
I think its a recipe worth repeating. Save those cliff hanger to be continued episodes for season finales. I'm really looking forward to the Captain Pike series. So much hype about it.
