Hello Everybody,
"I'd rather be here than the Vatican. I can feel God here ...
We are one."
~ Carlos Santana, at Jazz Fest in New Orleans, 5/4/2023
Yes indeed. One, but also many. Too many to count.
This was a warm, and sunny afternoon. And on stage was their hero.
Many of them taking advantage of the $50 "Locals Thursday" tickets
discounted for Louisiana residents. Or those who claimed to be.
Naturally, I was one of them. And enjoying every minute of it.
This day felt especially crowded for a Thursday. Not really sure
if it had anything to do with Santana. Or Buddy Guy, an 86-year old
blues legend born in Louisiana who came on stage before him.
No matter. Both were entertaining. And well worth the show.
Guy was tossing out picks to the crowd as he was playing, making
the crowd wait for him to introduce Santana. This was after he had
broken a string, yet continuing to play, never finishing any song
he was playing. What a card. Could have gone on forever, never
finishing a song. Especially since he had brought his son along,
who also played guitar ...
"I don't want you to go home and think I forgot the fucking song.
I quit it on purpose."
See there? Buddy Guy is always of sound mind and body.
Santana and his band then came on stage, wasting no time at all.
And yes, he did bring his Black Magic Woman with him, his drummer
Cindy Blackman, who also happens to be his wife. He opened his
show with, you guessed it, "Black Magic Woman" and followed by
"Oye Como Va." Awesome he still had the talent to play at that
level, never missing a beat, as if he had never aged.
Just like Buddy Guy, Santana also performed songs that were not
his own, such as "The Thrill is Gone" and "Ain't No Sunshine."
Best $50 I ever spent in my life.
For Life,
Lee
