I've been tasked to find an english version of L'Arracheuse de
temps. I think I found a suitable subtitled version:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3hZ249QOh8

Question.. if I rent it, would yt-dlp work to include the
    subtitles?

I'm guessing that the subtitles of the online versions of these
things are auto-generated by YT so the downloaded copy won't
    have them?

One way to find out might be to try to watch it on YT and, while it is on, click the "gear" button. I think there should be an option in there to
turn subtitles on/off. If you turn them off, and they are still there,
that means they are burned into the video. If you turn them off and they
    go away, they are autogenerated.

    Hello Mike Powell!

One way to find out might be to try to watch it on YT and,
while it is on, click the "gear" button. I think there
should be an option in there to turn subtitles on/off. If
you turn them off, and they are still there, that means

The only catch is that I would have to dole out the fee to even
    begin watching it. I am not personally interested in the film;
I'm just looking into it for a friend.

There are other rental sources, like Apple TV, but I'm not sure
if the rental would use the autogenerate technology too.
However, their advertising mentions "Closed captioned: French |
    English".

Anyone here have any success downloading with yt-dlp from apple
    TV?

The YT rental scheme isn't very nice. "Start within 30 days,
finish within 48 hours after first playback."
