I like to hit the stores the day after Halloween, Easter, etc and stock
up on the discounted candy.

I once temped for a local bookstore (in addition to books they had all
sorts of office supplies, etc). It was around Christmas.
Instead of marking down the leftovers they were collected the after we returned from Christmas day, stacked on pallets and moved to a second floor store room, and unsold Valentine's Day candy was brought down to replace it, that had been sitting there sinc

Anyway.. As a bookshop owner, I hate seasonal titles. I'm
always left with unsold Christmas/Easter/Valentines/Halloween-
themed books for kids. I just round up the left overs and
store them for the next time the season rolls around.

The good news is that we've compressed all the major holidays into one day...much to the dismay of government workers, bankers, etc. The bad news

It was about the candy and stuff that had been sitting in the storeroom
since the last time of the holiday.

I imagine that's about all you can do with them.
With social media, games, etc I wonder how many kids today actually read books, unless "forced" to? With so many with short attention spans today.

You would be surprised. Kids learn about hot trrendy books via
their social media! LOL

Consistent sellers are manga graphic novels (the ones you read
back to front), Captain Underpants, Bad Guys, Dog Man, Wimpy
Kid, Dork Diaries, The Princess in Black, Diary of an 8-Bit
Warrior, the book series by Rick Riordan, the different series
by Sarah Maas, and Cinda Williams Chima, and Victoria Aveyard,
and Casandra Clare.

There is super hot series right now called Shadow & Bone by
Leigh Bardugo (now adapted for Netflix); I never seem to have
enough before I run out. The Harry Potter series are a staple;
they are always summertime and wintertime favourites.

There are quite a few other authors, too numerous to remember
off the top of my head.

When there is an adaptation to a tv series, many people want to
get a head start (or get "more to the story") and read the
books.

I saw a story where a long time private school in the area was closing,
due to all the crap with COVID-19. It didn't help that one of their teachers was arrested on charges of child pornography.
