    Hey Alan!

I see Slackware development (both 32 and 64 bit) has updated to kv-6. Same with slackwareaarch64-current although I have yet to try it (any version).

Yes, I saw that. I did take slackware-current out for a look about a month ago. There was only one minor issue I encountered, I don't remember what it was now but I'm sure it has been or can be resolved now.

I have an urge to go take a closer look but lfs is using my one free partition. The next time I need to partition I am going to add an extra space for stuff like that.

    Hey Alan!

I did take slackware-current out for a look about a month ago.
There was only one minor issue I encountered,

I installed it on a laptop and it had MAJOR issues with kv-5. I plan to try it now that they've moved on. I can't say that I am a big fan of kv-5.

I don't remember what it was now but I'm sure it has been or can
    be resolved now.

I am hoping kv-6 takes it over the top.

The next time I need to partition I am going to add an extra
    space for stuff like that.

For uefi boots I dedicate entire disks for that. For the legacy boots I stick with an extra partition. Speaking of which I have framebuffers working but no joy on boot penguins ... yet. The legacy boot is an inteldrm based jobber (aka Little Mikey's Brain). For sure the amdgpu is the better option as far as boot penguins are concerned.

I am hoping to get an orange pi jobber up and running (aarch64) and will probably try installing the -current version of that onto what I hoe will be a successful first boot on a nvme disk on that particular platform. I have a great dislike using uSD cards for boot disks ... other that for install disks that is but even there regular USB flash disks are cheaper and better methinks.

I don't see the penguins here like I used to. I'm not exactly sure why.

I recently booted the arch linux live CD and there were the penguins, only two in my case but there they were. I'm not sure what the difference is but there they were.. :)

For sure the amdgpu is the better option as far as boot penguins are concerned.

My laptop uses amdgpu if I am not mistaken. I'll have to try something new there.

I am not even sure what driver my lfs is using. lspci -k sees it but doesn't report what the kernel driver in use is. That machine has an nvidia card and I tried to build the kernel with the noveau driver but it hangs on boot so I don't add that support. I wonder if building it into the kernel or as a module makes a difference. I'll try again and see if I can make that go.

I just booted kv-6.1.5 with the nouveau driver and it worked this time.

    That makes a nice difference.

    Hey Alan!

I don't see the penguins here like I used to. I'm not exactly
    sure why.

I am blaming kv-5 myself. I did have legacy boot penguins on a few versions but overall kv-5 was a real haedache here for many, many, many reasons.

I recently booted the arch linux live CD and there were the
penguins, only two in my case but there they were.

The archlinux people are good. It doesn't surprise me that they got it working but uefi slackare live CDs also worked, or at least the uefi boot ones do. However there were issues with framebuffer graphics off and on. At the moment all seems fine with kv-6 kernels and graphics.

My laptop uses amdgpu if I am not mistaken.

Same here. Also znver2 processor. I might build a custom LFS for it but from the moment it is more useful as a slackware64-15.0 test thingy. Four penguins on there and it doesn't have any fidonet schtuffenptten on it ... yet.

    Subsystem: ASRock Incorporation Picasso
    Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
    Kernel modules: amdgpu

The above is on the EuroPoint where I am replying to your fine and upstanding MSG as we speak. It isn't a laptop but is close enough for this purpose and for sure is fidonet capable.

I wonder if building it into the kernel or as a module makes a
    difference.

    If you're attempting uefi make sure the directory /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/ exists and if it is empty then it needs to be mounted at bootup. I added this entry to my /etc/fstab;

    efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs nosuid,nodev,noexec 0 0

and there are four penguins on bootup. :-)

Excellent! Always nice to get the driver right. I've never had one of those but have heard good things about them.

    That makes a nice difference.

    No doubt about that here.

    Hey Benny!

    a new precompiled problem ?,

Same problem that ever was. However in this case I updated to slackware64-current dated Friday the 13th and it installed and is now booted on the laptop in question (Acer Swift 3). Also slackware64-15.0 insttalled on there just fine.

    who uses 32bit in 2023 ?,

I don't know. Last one I had was a i486 around 2004-ish. Since it died it has been pure 64-bit here. Also my first x86_64 was built using a cross-compiler on a 32-bit system (dual 933MHz p3's) just before the unofficial demise of 32-bit in this neck of the woods.

we still have no need for the alpha :=)

We'll never know will we? Last time I was offered one was back in 1997-ish and I would have had to pay the shipping. I turned it down. I am guessing it was the right thing to do.

It is still widely used. I use it on a Raspberry Pi, and on some other low-powered devices (a Wyse thin client) which will not run 64-bit OS.

There are many other examples and use cases.
