Anyone else using youtube-dl at YT on a regular basis? Recently it seems that DLs seem to have slowed to about 1/10th the speed.

I use it and 4K Video Downloader (for Windows) sometimes too/instead. I'm amazed (and very glad) that YT lets them work at all! :-)

I dunno.. DOES it manage to achieve faster downloads? I
won't be able to try it for several days the next time at a DSL
    connection.

Thanks for the heads-up on that one. It's only for the 64bit
on Windows, but it might be a good replacement on one of my /64

Is there something that YT can detect to disallow it entirely?

I got a bit frustrated with 4K VD for some sreason and decided
to stick with youtube-dl. ytd also allows downloading any
video file that has a direct link. It works on Rumble and
    Vimeo videos too.

i use it but i wouldn't say regularly... mostly for grabbing some rocket launch videos for later analysis...

Recently it seems that DLs seem to have slowed to about 1/10th the
    speed.

that could be caused by any number of things in the path from the server's file system to your system's file system, really...

    eg:
    overloaded router in the path
active virus scanner scanning all traffic on the wire
DDOS on the sending or receiving end

    FWIW:

i just pulled ULA's recent Atlas V launch video (Uz8zGWycsOY) and it seems to be averaging 78KiB/s for a 17.4MiB file... i guess that's ok... this with the 2021 Dec 17 update of youtube-dl... i can't say if that's good, bad, or average, though...

yt-dlp pulls the same video much much faster (3 seconds vs 3 minutes) but the output is slightly different (both video and audio are webm as is the final container vs youtube-dl's webm and m4a with final container being mkv)... i may not have everything installed that yt-dlp wants, though...

in both cases of the above video, i see the same "playback problem" at the same position in the 25 second video but this may be due to playing them on this older system... the "problem" being large lag of the video image starting about 13 seconds into the video... this lag is not seen when playing the video directly from youtube on the same system, though...

Maybe it's just a recent/temporary slowdown across the
platform? I'm getting the same poor results whether on DSL or
    mobile hotspot.

..it seems to be averaging 78KiB/s for a

I had good +650KiB/s speed with the same (most recent) youtube-
dl version right up to about 2 weeks ago.

yt-dlp pulls the same video much much faster (3 seconds vs
3 minutes) but the output is slightly different (both

Wow. With yt-dlp at full speed vs youtube-dl toggled down then
the slowdown may indeed be something that YT is detecting with
youtube-dl usage and therefore adjusting the speed afterall.
Haven't tried yt-dlp yet. I know that I can use VLC to do
    conversions.

in both cases of the above video, i see the same "playback

when playing the video directly from youtube on the same
    system, though...

Thx for chining back with the comparisons. Looks like yt-dlp
wil be the next goto program for me. I'm trying to DL a 311MB
file (already using the "-f 18" option in youtube-dl for a
lower quality version) ..but even that is taking 1hr 40min at
    an average 50-60KiB/s. :(

one way to find out would be to take a look at the sources and see what user agent is being used... then change it and see what happens... it may be that the tool is identifying itself and a more generic browser UA could be used...

    [edit]

i just found the --dump-user-agent command line option... i don't see anything that appears to allow one to specify a different UA...

    $ /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl --dump-user-agent
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/73.0.3683.50 Safari/537.36

of course, YT might also be analyzing how the downloads are being done and throttling based on certain flow patterns they are seeing...

but then i look at the following and wonder...

    $ /usr/local/bin/yt-dlp --dump-user-agent
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/91.0.4472.164 Safari/537.36

the only difference i see is the Chrome version... hummm

I just did a check (youtube-dl -U) and I'm up to date with a version date or 2021.12.17.

That doesn't seem to me like they stopped development.

I do recall that they went through a hosting problem some time ago so that you needed to reinstall youtube-dl because doing a 'youtube-dl -U' with the old version went to the old server, which wasn't there anymore.
