    Hi Mike,

The weather people are talking about high surf and rip tides for the lower coastal area of NC but that's about it. We're still a long way from normal out in the western part of the state. Talking about rebuilding I-40 but need to put down some soil stabilisers where the road is washed out clear up to the median divider.

I have seen some reports that it will be this time next year, or
later, before they get I-40 and I-26 fixed. Were the two lanes of 40
that were not washed out stable enough that they could allow 2-way traffic, or are they also closed?

Personally, I wouldn't want to travel on the two remaining lanes until
the area around the highway was well stabilised and a barrier set up
between the road and the water. Right now they're just beginning to
assess damages and start debating what to do. I've read some folks think
that this section of I-40 needs to be re-routed to avoid the problems it
has had over the years; that would be very expensive and time consuming
but when you look at how many times that section of road has been
closed, it starts to make sense. I'll keep y'all updated on recovery
progress in western NC; a lot has been done (mostly by non governmental sources) and a whole lot more is yet to be done.

Meanwhile, we're in western NY for a few days; I enjoyed a beef on 'weck sandwich followed by a slice of chocolate mousse pie for supper tonight.
