• Hotkeys for Xtrn/Doors

From HSM@VERT/FREESPEA to All on Mon Jun 29 10:07:00 2020
    Hi,

How can I change hotkeys for doors? The numerical sequence is fine but there are a few instances where I want to assign a letter instead of a number.

    Thanks in advance,
    Gary

The external programs section is performed by xtrn_sec.js. You could potentially modify the code in there, but that's a generic script and doesn't have door-specific code. One thing you could do is add a menu to your command shell with letters to run a specific set of doors.

It's better to stick with numbers instead. What if you have 2 doors that
start with the same first letter?

    Huh?

I have eleven doors that start with the numeral "1". They all
    work fine.

He said he wanted to *assign* letters to a door command. Doesn't
matter what letter the name of the door starts with.

Heh. Well then you would come back here and ask a vague and
detail-lacking question about why your sbbs was corrupted. Then
you would probably edit your text.dat with an iPad version of
    WordStar to fix it.

Could have sworn I had an ==CODE jump menu or a hotkey setup, but damned
if I can find it now.

If you wanted to just use consecutive command key letters (e.g. A, B, C, ...) that would be a trivial change to xtrn_sec.js to support. Of course then, 'Q' may not be available for "Quit" so you'd have to account for that.

You know, nano IS my jam... and I KNOW what vim/vi is very powerful (although only if you know what you're doing/implement add-ins, etc...) but VIM is the one I can't seem to understand why folks gravitate to..

I think its because I've never given it the time and/or never learned it past just knowing how to load/save/exit... but someone who uses it, WHY is it so powerful??

I've watched youtube videos with guys showing how to do MUCH MORE than just edit text files in VIM; although even tho they were explaining it to me, I didn't understand after the first few minutes!

    Why do you love VIM?

You could create a global hotkey that sends you strait into the xtrn
section. Or prompts for a number or code that you can enter. There are
a lot of ways to skin this cat with JS.

    Why do you love VIM?

I appreciate ("love" is probably too strong a word) vi/vim, because it's always available regardless of what *nix flavor/version/distro, works with all terminals/configurations, and you can do all your editing tasks without moving your hands away from the "home" position on the keyboard. Can't really say that for any other editor.

Great answer that I can respect and understand...

Also, I've seen folks deep dive into VIM and it can DO a lot more things, if willing and able to learn.

    Why do you love VIM?

I got really used to using Vim at a previous job. I explored its features and ended up with a .vim configuration directory in my home directory that had custom color schemes for a few different programming languages, and I had macros for things like removing extraneous whitespace, adding Doxygen-style comments above functions in code, etc..

Another great response; Digital Man spoke about VIM being accessable across many different platforms and yours continues to drive home the point; LOL... I don't know how to harness its power. :P So I like nano, it just stay out of my way and lets me edit text... but thats all it does, too.

Sounds like with some work VIM will do a lot more.. learning curve and all.

So I've been using "vi" forever, never really liked any other editor, and I think I know of 10% of what it can do.

I recently learnt of "vimtricks" where each week they email you something you can do in vi - I've already learnt some new things, and I've only been subscribed a couple of weeks..
