You have to enable Console mode, as version 2 doesn't have fossil driver support. At times, it can run slow, like Complete New World, but its

SCFG is the Synchronet configuration program. You can copy and paste settings from it here, like this:

    Name tw2test
    Internal Code TW2TEST
    Start-up Directory ../xtrn/tw2_1120
    Command Line tw2 /P:%f
    Clean-up Command Line
    Execution Cost None
    Access Requirements
    Execution Requirements
    Multiple Concurrent Users Yes
    Intercept I/O No
    Native Executable/Script No
Use Shell or New Context No
    Modify User Data No
    Execute on Event No
    Pause After Execution No
BBS Drop File Type GAP DOOR.SYS
Place Drop File In Node Directory

I tried tw2 release 11.20 and I could reproduce the issue you described (output from the door, but it would not recognize keyboard input). I tried using the tw2 /C option to force the program to use the COM/UART output (hoping for different results), but it always seemed to detect and use the FOSSIL driver automatically (and it apparently isn't happy with the Synchronet FOSSIL driver).

I also tried using it's /D (DOSIO) I/O mode, but while keyboard input worked in that case, there was not display output.

I'm exerimenting to see if I can just disable the FOSSIL driver for a specific external program in SBBS/SCFG and seeing if that'll force TW2 to then use the COM/UART (which is also virtualized in the same FOSSIL driver, but it's a different interface to the program) and see if I get different results. I'm gusesing it's just a bug in the tw2 FOSSIL support, but don't know for sure yet. I'll get back to ya.

I would like to know if it works with netfoss - that could be indicator of some missing feature or bug in the Synchronet FOSSIL.

I tried disabling the FOSSIL support in a special build of SBBS and a couple of lines of text would come out of tw2 (release 11.20) before it would crash the ntvdm. Other doors seem to work fine however.

What does your tw2.doc file say (for that version) about FOSSIL

I looked, and there was NOTHING in the documentation about fossil support. Version 3 of the game DOES have Fossil Driver Support...as does the Trade
Wars Services utility. The latter allows ways to obtain credits faster, and
for managing their empire (moving planets, colonists, commodities, etc.) to needed sectors.

If there is a wide beta 8 of Trade Wars 2002 version 2, I'd like to obtain it.

I lost the version of Trade Wars Services for version 3 of Trade Wars in
a crash years ago, and I've never been able to find it on the internet...the developers are long gone. One version that I found apparently had a glitch, where players could see where Ferrengal and any other planets were, including those not their own. To me, that put newer players at a disadvantage in the game...as they didn't have a chance to build up their resources against other players.

I did see a message on Facebook about a new version of Trade Wars 2002
Game Server by John Pritchett (I don't recall his exact name), and I think
it was in the Telnet BBS Guide group. I'll defer to admin Dave Perussel on that.

What does your tw2.doc file say (for that version) about FOSSIL support? --

I looked, and there was NOTHING in the documentation about fossil support.

Weird. The tw2.doc files I have here (and I have 2 of them), both detail their fossil support, e.g.

    VERSION 2

    SysOp Reference for Release 11.20

o Support for FOSSIL communication drivers.

F[OSSIL] - This will force the program to use FOSSIL driver for input
and output. This command is superfluous because TW2 will
automatically search for a FOSSIL driver and use it if it
is found. Using /F will cause TW2 to skip the search, and
simply try to use the FOSSIL. If the program fails to find
the FOSSIL driver, it will switch to its own com port
    routines.

What is a FOSSIL driver? A FOSSIL driver is a device driver
loaded into your computers memory when it boots up. Usually
in your CONFIG.SYS file. It is a standardized way for
programs to interface to your communications port.

Same for release 11.14 from 1992. Maybe you should update your copy of tw2?

I want to say Wide Beta 7. When I went to option O in TEDIT, it
didn't show anything with fossil driver support.

What does your tw2.doc file say (for that version) about FOSSIL
    support? --

I looked, and there was NOTHING in the documentation about fossil support. Version 3 of the game DOES have Fossil Driver Support...as does the Trade

you are confused about what version we are talking about.

my copy of this tw2 game has twedit.exe

If there is a wide beta 8 of Trade Wars 2002 version 2, I'd like to obtain it.

tradewards 2002 isnt the same version that we are talking about.

I did see a message on Facebook about a new version of Trade Wars 2002 Game Server by John Pritchett (I don't recall his exact name), and I think it was in the Telnet BBS Guide group. I'll defer to admin Dave Perussel on that.

I was just looking to add another Tradewars

It gave me some ideas, so maybe I can get it working after all.

Well if anyone can, that would be you.. :)

Ah, and so I did. :-)

You can get the updated dosxtrn.exe here: ftp://vert.synchro.net/Synchronet/dosxtrn.exe http://web.synchro.net/api/files.ssjs?call=download-file&dir=sbbs&file=dosxtrn.exe

The "fix" was to implement a dummy "Keyboard read" function in the Synchronet FOSSIL driver. Apparently TW2 is using this function to read the local keyboard (weird) and unless that FOSSIL function returns the special "no key available" value (0xFFFF in AX), then TW2 will never call the FOSSIL function to read a character from the COM port. Anyway, it's working now.

    Rob,

What year was the version of the game that *you're* playing, released?

The date on the main executable is Sept. 20, 1995. It's version 2, wide
beta 8. I could not find any version prior to version 3 at archives.thebbs.org and apparently bbsfiles.com is down (the author has been battling cancer).

I have several addons (Q, Wandering Planets, Supply Ship, Bajorans, Borg, Cardassians, Klingons, Romulans, and Vulcans), along with Trade Wars Services. The date on the race add-ons is March 28, 1996, with the date on Q, The Wandering Planets, and the Supply Ship as of May 25, 1995. Trade Wars
Services is dated March 1, 1996.

None of these that I noted can be registered anymore...I was lucky enough
to register them before they were abandoned.
