• SBBS 3.17 -> 3.18 (Dev)

    From Prince@VERT to Digital Man on Mon Sep 14 04:23:28 2020
    Hi DM.

    So, I started with my write up of "Synchronet Door Server" configuration; and ran into a roadblock.

    My install of SBBS 3.17b onto Win2k3 R2 went flawless. I'm able to configure, run, etc.

    My issues crop up after following the Development Update Instructions. I've downloaded and extracted the ZIPs, and ran JSExec Update. No errors.

    However, once I re-launch SBBS, I get errors stating that "node directory already exists", and the Control Panel crashes out.

    If I try to launch SCFG, I get an error stating the C:\SBBS\Ctrl\main.cnf is missing; however it is there.

    Verified %SBBSCTRL% variable set to C:\sbbs\ctrl, and as my domain admin account is a local administrator on this virtual machine, I've verified my permissions are intact and correct.

    Strangely, the update process worked flawlessly the other day when I attempted this, so not quite sure what was different.

    I'll keep plugging away at this, but thought I'd reach out just in case there may be something I'm missing.

    Thanks again!

    Doh! Too early, and apparently reading is not my forte this morning.

    Right at the top of the development page - it states the requirement for VC2015 redist. Missed this part.

    I shall carry on...

    No dice after Dev upgrade to 3.18 :(

    !ERROR17 (File exists) creating directory C:\SBBS\NODE1\

    SCFG errors with

    Main configuration file C:\sbbs\ctrl\main.cnf missing!

    Yet, verified the file is in fact there.

    Thoughts?

    None come to mind. I think you're the only one getting those "ERROR 17" errors, so is there something unique or different about your Windows system?

    I don't think anything out of the ordinary.

    -Brand new VM deployed from Windows 2003 R2 ISOs (Disk1/Disk2).
    -Joined to my active directory domain (perhaps something here, will check). -VC++ 2008 Redist Installed.
    -VC++ 2010 Redist Installed.
    -VC++ 2015 Redist Installed.

    -SBBS 3.17b Installed. Works flawless.

    -Perform upgrade steps (extract ZIPs over EXEC and TEXT directories, replace TEXT.DAT in CTRL directory), run JSExec Update.

    -Launch SBBS - confirms 3.18, but get the errors and the telnet server fails to start. SCFG throws errors that the config file can't be found.

    I'll disjoin from the domain and try again; perhaps some old GPO setting is causing it to shit.

    More to come...

    Same thing, unfortunately.

    Not sure if this helps; Windows application log reports these two errors:

    Reporting queued error: faulting application sbbsctrl.exe, version 3.17.1.0, faulting module sbbs.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00102a79

    8 seconds later:

    Reporting queued error: faulting application sbbsctrl.exe, version 3.17.1.0, faulting module sbbs.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x001050c0

    The fault addresses are consistent in each round of errors.

    So now that I know you're running W2k3, I was able reproduce the problem on Windows XP and it's a known Microsoft bug:
    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/32452777/visual-c-2015-express-stat-not-working-on-windows-xp

    I install some vc-redist packages on XP system but nothing has fixed the problem yet.

    It's odd that the version reported there is 3.17, yet, you said v3.17 was working fine.

    Good Morning DM.

    I've dug into this a bit further, and found that the entries in the application log do in fact refer to SBBS 3.17b out of the box on 2k3/XP. When the Control Panel first loads, terminal server has "difficulty" binding to '0.0.0.0,::' and the control panel will crash. Some mad clicking and typing skills to quickly change the bindings to the IP address of the virtual machine stop this behavior, and all is fine. When those crashes occur, the application log contains those entries - which is why it mentions 3.17.1.0.

    I've installed the latest VC++ 2015 Update 3 in the hopes of fixing it, but the behavior persists. (The initial 3.17b crashing until binding updates, as well as the !ERROR17 (File Exists) after performing the update to 3.18.

    My apologies if I jumped the gun and lead you down the wrong road on the 3.17.1.0/application log bit; although it still seems like something worth debugging?

    I'm digging deeper over here as well.
