Cut and pasted *what* from the wiki? "The install" usually invovles downloading a GNUmakefile which checks out files from CVS and performs a build. I thought you were gonig to try an "update", which is simply replacing executable binary files (e.g. sbbs, lib*.so) in your exec directory.

i compiled synchronet in the past, dont know what it could be.

It sounds like you're trying to run 'sbbs' in some directory where you didn't also extract the libraries (e.g. libsbbs.so).

The first error is usually the clue you/we need to resolve it.

i'll give it some time and try again. it barfed out a billion errors.

Yeah, you only need to repor the first few.

this isnt my first rodeo and i've compiled and setup other sofwares for linux.

And hundreds of other people have built Synchronet on Linux over the years and continue to do so every day...

any idea what this could be? maybe i should just backup my menus and
    text.dat and start from scratch.

    Not necessary.

oh that's too bad. the glibc version on my server vm is 2.23.

the people on the internets say dont update to a version that isnt standard with your distro.

well in a way this is a good thing. i'll create a separate vm for my bbs like i should have done in the beginning and i'll run it on a newer ubuntu distro.

It's generally preferred to build from source for that reason.

Thanks for the help. i never had to do that variable, or i dont recall doing it.

If you build on your own system, the 'sbbs' file will contain the correct path to the lib*.so files automatically (no LD_LIBRARY_PATH needed). Most people build on their own system, so they don't run into that problem.

    have a good one!

    You too!
