I don't know. I just haven't had any attacks on my PayPal account, apparently. One thing is I try to use passwords that don't include real words. They may be harder to remember, but once I've used a password a few times, I start to memorize it and remember it.

I think some account hacking attempts succeed because people often use a password that includes a real word, or a combination of some real words.

"easily"? Paypal has 346 million active accounts. If it was "easy" to rob someone's account, the number wouldn't be that high.

I use paypal for business, and have for almost 20 years, now. Never been "hacked" because I'm not an idiot. Secure passwords, 2FA (when it became available), and common sense (don't click on that phishing e-mail) keep things secure on my end.

Paypal's been pretty consistently secure on their end.

I'm not sure it's any easier than hacking into any other banking site. There's security in place at PayPal's site, just like with any other banking site. I haven't heard of any major security issues specific to PayPal.

Yes, they take a cut. It is quite an expensive cut, but that is not the problem IMO.

The problems are more like they will side with the buyer every single time until you can prove your case as a seller - despite the fact the seller is the one paying PayPal and thus the real customer. Also removing the account limits can be a bit of a headache. I have had them receive my documentation for removing account limits and ignore it in the past which is very concerning. And then they require all this information from you, you make your merchant account, and you cannot use any funds that reach it until PayPal decides to consider your account trustworthy and hand your money to you.

If it was a bank doing this they would set their offices on fire.

Oh, and if you complain they reserve the right to shut your account down. ANd you have no right to recommend other payment processors. And you cannot charge the customers the payment processor fees - despite the fact they are usualy the most expensive or the second most expensive you are likely to use.

You guys read the ToS, do you?

So you're saying using a complex password can deter criminals but how do you remember it yourself? Do you write it down on a piece of paper or something?

You can write it down at first, but after you use it a few times, you just start to remember.. I have some passwords like that and when I use them often enough, I just remember without having to look at what I have written down.

There are also password managers, which are programs you can use that can generate complex passwords and store them for you to log into various sites. Then you just need to remember the password for your password manager, and the password manager will manage complex passwords for you. There are password manager apps for Windows as well as mobile devices like Android, iPhone, and iPad.

Passwords don't have to be randomly generated. there's a great XKCD comic that shows a simple way to create a secure, easily memorizable password: https://xkcd.com/936/

It's not so bad for sellers. It's a little bit more expensive per transaction than if you had a merchant account, but you don't have to pay for expensive software or equipment to process credit cards.

I like the Diceware system. It generates bery long, high entropy passwords that are easy to remember, and there are many diceware lists you can choose from.

I like pass-store and keepass, but I also have notebooks with passwords lists in a safe. The real important paswords exist only in my head, though. This is a problem because if you are under bad stress you can find you don't remember them. I have had to crack some of my own 90 characters long passwords because I could not remember the last three digits.

I think some account hacking attempts succeed because people often use a password that includes a real word, or a combination of some real words.

If your bank card is linked to paypal they don't need a password. I buy a lot on ebay. I've always had a problem with unauthorized. Isn't ironic that paypal and ebay around owned by the same company (Owner). It's basically the same as giving your bank card info to a porn site. Eventually you're gonna get "fucked".

Of course not. It's your word against theirs. You can have all the security you want but you'll never stop online crooks. Best thing to do is use a disposable debit card and only transfer the amount you want to pay. Do not keep any type of balance. If you like to swipe your card a lot .. well that's not going to help much. You probably have so much cash (credit) it's hard to keep track of. I was watching the show American Greed yesterday. You can get complex without being hard to remember. 4 random words strung together gives you a very long password with very high entropy, but is likely very easy to remember.

I think some account hacking attempts succeed because people often
use a password that includes a real word, or a combination of some
    real words.

If your bank card is linked to paypal they don't need a password. I buy a lot on ebay. I've always had a problem with unauthorized. Isn't ironic that paypal and ebay around owned by the same company (Owner). It's basically the same as giving your bank card info to a porn site. Eventually you're gonna get "fucked".

it's not the people being compromised. it's the sites with their shitty security being compromised. i got a chime card just to make shit purchases and fucker got locked right away with someone trying to do a paypal purchase. i just activated it and did nothing. luckily i didnt put any money on the card.
so i unlocked it and they sent me a new card and same shit happened. so i figured fuck that service, they dont have their shit together.

i know dropbox has had their password lists stolen several times.
i used an alias and i see hits on my server using that unique email
    address password.

they wont own up to it, of course.

It's amazing how a person won't miss a few million here and there. ;-)

well even though i have several credit and debit cards, i set it up to notify me with everything if possible. the only time my cc was compromised was when i bought bitcoin at coinbase. that's the only time in my entire adult life.
that fucker went on a spending spree, too.

i cant believe they didnt block that shit from happening but will call me up when i pay my server bill which is from a company based in canada.

A password manager is one solution. Then you only have to remember the password that unlocks the password manager, and it remembers the password for the sites you use.

Even with a chequing acct? Wow cool. I signed up with PayPal back in 2010 and got $1K withdrawn which wiped me to $0 balance. They investigated it and caught the person responsible for it. The bank had to reimburse me and they changed the acct number. Guess my pwd was too weak and they figured it out easily but I was new to PayPal back then. So call me a little skeptical now. But Apple I believe is to be trustworthy because of their ecosystem. Live under the dome, so to speak as they say.
