• Synchronet Multi User

From HusTler@VERT/HAVENS to All on Sun Jul 12 08:55:29 2020

Has Synchronet ever been tested with 10 or more users connected at the same time? Has IRC or any chat features been tested with 10 or more users? I'm curious to know how well Synchronet holds up with a large load of users online at the same time. I don't know how a SysOp could even get 10 or more users to connect at the same time to test it but I think it would be an interesting project. I would be curious to know what the min processor and ram requirements would be to handle let's say 20 users online at the same time without any lag.
Just thinking out loud that's all. Maybe some SysOps ran Synchronet boards when IRC was craze and users were downloading and chatting all at the same time.

... For certain people, after fifty, litigation takes the place of sex.

that's a very broad question that is dependant on hardware.

i will say this: years ago when i was on bbsnet and i linked a file on my web it slowed my bbs down pretty bad when i had multiple people connecting to my synchronet web.

so i ran my web on apache linux and i didnt have that issue.

i dont think we have honestly had that many people online at once. maybe the most i've had is 5 people and i didnt notice much of a problem when they were all playing doorgames.

regarding IRC, irc is very very very low resources.
like i ran out of harddrive space on my server and i had attackers and my server was shitting itself and i had no idea because stuff was running great on irc. this was Unreal, and not the .js synchronet irc daemon, though.

overall i dont think you will experience problems. if someone is connected to your nntp server and downloading tons of msgs you might have some lag with dos doorgames. that is my personal experience.

Thanks for your reply. Of course if I had a a fast processor with tons of ram they're would be no problems. I was curious as to how Synchronet held up with some of the older machines. Like mine ;-). I notice some BBS SysOps are still using DOS based machines so I guess it depends on your system.

the best bbs machine is an optiplex off ebay and throw some memory in it.
get like 8 gigs or more in there and have it host a 32bit windows vm.

dont get that core duo junk. get an i5 or better.
if you are lucky you can get them for 60-80 bucks.

    There aren't 10 users who use BBS's.

It would also help if you kept your lines to <80 characters, usually 76 is a good number to allow for quoting.

Most of mine actually email and let me know. They usually find it via the sbbs board list. Some find it on the telnet list that is out there and I forget the URL. Some are curious, most used BBS's in the past and want an retro experience, a few are other sysops or former sysops.

well i have a questionaire and they answer that.

those guys that want a 'retro' experience are the ones that dont hang around, i know that.

it's too bad we dont have users anymore, but that's the nature of the beast. ---

Old message, but in the ~2003 time frame, I had dedicated chat hosts a
couple hours a night, I think the most I had on the BBS was around 15 in
the bbs group chat locally. There were a few local boards in the
Phoenix area that had Synchronet chats at 8-12 nodes and that was on
    mid-90's hardware.

IRC should be able to handle it fine, IIRC the nets route through VERT
and there's often more than that in IRC at once. YMMV of course.
