From Divarin@VERT/MUTINY to All on Sun Nov 8 08:05:48 2020
Recently I picked up a book some of you may have heard of called "Algorithms to Live By". One of the problems (and thus an exploration of algorithms to solve such a problem) described is the explore/exploit problem.

This is the "should we go to our favorite resturant or try something new" problem. Without getting too much into the algorithms described in the chapter (which would be off topic) one example used was the film industry.

Essentially, the section stated that in general one tends to favor exploit (use what you know) over explore (try something new) when nearing the end of being able to avail yourself of all choices. For example if you plan on moving out of the city soon you're much more likely to go with resturants that you know rather than trying something new.

Anyway the book stated that the film industry fits into this pattern in that over the last two decades there's been a lot more exploiting (sequils and prequils) rather than exploring (new stories).

I've felt for a long time that the film industry has been in a steady decline and I started to think that I've always taken it for granted that it would just keep being there doing what it's doing. But then again a lot of things I've taken as a constant turned out not to be.

I always assumed that big shopping malls were just a fact of life, but of course there hasn't always been shopping malls and now they are in steep decline. I`ve always assumed that record labels and book publishers would be the final deciders of what musicians and novelists would have their works exposed to the general public but of course there haven`t always been record labels or book publishers and now it`s easier to self publish rather than going through a publisher so those industries are on their way out as well.

So why wouldn't large film production companies be next? They are unwilling to risk trying anything new, they are almost entirely focused on exploit rather than explore, hardly anyone goes to the theater anymore and quite honestly the last few times I did it was a regretful experience.

Of course there`s a lot more inertia there due to a few facts:

For one thing making a film requires skilled and talented actors and although some skilled actors might be found at your local playhouse those skills may not necessarily lend itself to film.

Also making a good film is hard and requires a lot of time, effort, and skill by a team of people.

So I'm left wondering. If the "Hollywood" model of film making is in decline and on the way out (albeit slowly) and the hurtles that home-town movie producers have to overcome to fill that niche are still too great, what will we see next?

Obviously from the established film studios yet more exploit and less exploration but I feel like another niche is opening up there somewhere, something Hollywood doesn`t want to do and our hometown producers can`t do.

It might be more computer generated movies or animated (using home computers) because this is a way to put story to film which doesn't require finding and paying actors. But for actual live-action films are we just stuck with (insert your favorite franchise from the 80's/90's here)++ ?

What new technologies need be invented, or made more accessible, for a middle-class aspiring film maker to take a new, original idea, from mind to silver screen? Will there even be a silver screen? Will movie watching be almost exclusivly done in private in home?

There are great films that use a single room and a dozen actors for production. With a decent plot you can do great films for cheap.

Twelve Angry Men (the Henry Fonda one), ARQ, The Exam, Infinity Chamber, Cube. Not a big deal of special effects or action stunts. Plots and characters you care for.

I'd love to see an indie channel on Roku or cable. Imagine a place to
showcase independent, low-budget or crowdfunded films? I'd bookmark
    that.

Look at plays adapted to tv/film for a great example of that. David
Mamet's "Oleanna" and Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"
    come to mind.

Although, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor didn't come cheap!

FAIL-SAFE was a book made into a movie in 1964 that was mostly set in
a bunker with Henry Fonda and Larry Hagman.

I've been thinking about how venues could adapt to Covid. When you
can't fill a venue past 25%, you can't book the same acts you used to
book. I wonder if there might be a venue for independent stage
productions that wouldn't have normally had the opportunity, blended
streaming/live performances, or some way to market local (cheaper)
    talent.

Well, ever since I began getting HBO (many years ago) I never saw any point in going to the theatre. When a movie comes out that the Big Screen is a must then I'll go. Other then that I enjoy lying on the couch when I watch a movie.

When they played movies I cared for in the theatre, I think it ws worth it. You went out with friends and had dinner out after the movie was finished.

Theatres are becoming harder to justify as movies get worse, politically loaded, and people takes spoiled kids into the cinema to ruin the play for everybody. Which sucks because I miss the
    experience a bit.

No I didn't but will be more aware of it next time I watch it. I do know the intensity builds a lot so it makes sense that the walls appear closer. Another "Intensity technique" used by directors. ;-)

Yeah I can see if independant film makers become more popular due to less expensive technology and big film production companies being unwilling to try new things we can see some new and interesting stories being made with less flash and effects. Low-tech, simple, but enjoyable.

A good story is important, as is being familiar with lighting techniques and camera angles. Several years ago I began watching Star Trek fan fic films,
and the quality varies. Vic Mignogna's productions are on the better end, mainly because he knows how to frame shots and light the sets ands actors

He and Frawley are making homages to the original productions, which
is nice - the lighting on the eyes especially reminded me of the
original series. Having the TOS bridge duplicated is nice, too.

There's a 3d company called Jaunt VR that's doing some interesting
work with 360 degree cameras in live action events - imagine a VR
    Safari.

They also had cinematic efforts - one was a murder mystery, where you
were immersed into the environment. Instead of relying on the
director's framing, you could walk and look around the scene. It was
definitely early stages, but felt like where things would be going in
    20 years.

Have you tried cutting your own hair with a set of clippers? I've been doing it since we had our initial hard lockdown in March and haven't bothered going back to the barbers. I've learned how to do a basic fade and also how to cut the top of my hair with scissors. I now cut my hair once each week and it looks no worse than when I had it cut professionally... and I can do it more often. I save a lot of money (50 dollars per month) and no longer have to travel!

Funny, I haven't heard them called "barbers" here since maybe the late 80s or early 90s.. It seemed there was a transition phase when traditional barber shops here were replaced with hair salons (such as SuperCuts, GreatClips, etc.), which also seemed to charge more money. All I want is a basic haircut, which is what I usually get. I don't feel like I need any hair gel or hairspray or anything else they want to offer.

No, I haven't. I've got a thick mop of hair that gives hairdressers
fits the first time they try to cut it. If I do a clipper cut, it
    stands straight up.

    I had a flat-top in the 90s, can attest.

All I want is a basic haircut, which is what I usually get. I don't feel like I need any hair gel or hairspray or anything else they want to offer.

We tend to describe them as hair salons here if the establishment caters towards females or are for mixed sexes. The place I went to was more of a hair salon as they catered to people who were after technical haircuts, and they charge a lot more than an ordinary barber. A haircut from a standard barber here costs between 10-14 USD whereas if you go to a salon, you're paying twice as much.

I use a lot of product on my hair. The back and sides are short/faded and the top is around 2.5 inches long. I use powder dust to add some weight and dry it out before blow drying and thereafter shaping it before using 4/5 strength hairspray. I use other products also along with clay and gel-spray but that depends on the circumstances.

No, I haven't. I've got a thick mop of hair that gives hairdressers
fits the first time they try to cut it. If I do a clipper cut, it
    stands straight up.

    I had a flat-top in the 90s, can attest.

I have longer hair at the top (around 2.5 inches) and very short back and sides. I style with product and a hair dryer. I always cut the top of my hair with scissors because if I run a set of clippers through it, it would end up too short and I wouldn't be able to style it.

doing it since we had our initial hard lockdown in March and haven't bothered going back to the barbers. I've learned how to do a basic fade and also how to cut the top of my hair with scissors. I now cut my hair once each week and it looks no worse than when I had it cut professionally... and I can do it more often. I save a lot of money (50 dollars per month) and no longer have to travel!

what i have problems with is doing the back of my neck straight across. i usually put take across and use that as a guide. i screwed up big today and had to take off a lot of hair and fade it.

That sounds very difficult to do on your own with a mirror against another mirror. I don't have a straight line at the back of my neck. The natural hairline around by neck is curved like a semi-circle so it's easy for me to do.

Salons seem to crop up wherever I look. We have many Turkish barber shops in our country though. I think there's around 3-4 where I live along with one native English barber shop.

I've never really seen anyone bring pets into hair salons where I live.. I'd think there could potentially be issues with bringing dogs in - What if a dog suddenly barks loud, startling one of the hair stylists, causigng them to accidentally poke their customer with a pair of scissors? It probably wouldn't be very common, but I could see something like that potentially happening.

barbers normally have a lot of experience when a hair stylist can have any range of experience down to nothing.

in my state they are making barbers get certifications and most of those cover hair dying which is a stylist thing.

i'm going to have to say your perception is wrong and 99.99% of
movie goers go with another person.

nobody wants to meet some creepy dude in the lobby and arrage for a
    coffee and chat later on.

What does arranging for a coffee and chat have to do with going to see a movie?

i was replying to ogg. he said he creeps around in the movie theater lobby for tail.

i actually did that one time but someone else came in really late and sat in the front.

i cant remember what the movie was, but of course it was during the end of it's run in the theaters.

normally when i go to a theater there is someone that stinks real bad next to me or they are messing with their phone. that's why i want and enclosed cubicle.

    A theater to yourself?

Could be nice, but that would meen that things have really changed.....

Back in the day i used to go to the theater, it was mostly to make out with a random female movie goer like myself... It seemed like that was the thing back then... :)

Vic Mignogna's productions are on the better end,
mainly because he knows how to frame shots and light the sets ands actors like they did with TOS. Tim Russ has been able to bring in acting buddies om his projects, however the pacing and camera angles aren't quite right

CBS should consider greenlighting a Star Trek Anime so that Vic can do what he does now for the actual series rather then as a fan production, but also because then more people and money would be involved, and hopefully they would be able to fix those things.

I know about Lower Decks. I think a Star Trek Cartoon Comedy was a decent idea, the exection is pretty okay from what I've seen of the first 3 or 4 episodes. I'm talking about a legit Anime, hopefully with a more dramatic tone that follows the classic formula.

Imagine the cut away to the main casts "AHHH" recation when the Enemy Romulan reveals some awful plot twist, or all the mecha style crack headed design that would get put into the ships.

i think marcus theaters do plexiglass. i want my own little cubicle anyways.
i always get stinky people or loud people. i want to be able to kick back and snooze.

I miss pulling up on the drive in movie theater in my full sized v8 family sedan, with it's body on frame design and bench seats. Back when fuel economy was the land of milk and honey, and everyone smoked camels -- no filter.

    We really lost something.

    Being single? It's the shit.

I don't think that's what I was originally referring to, actually. However the coffee has not started to kick in yet and I do not feel motivated enough to go back into the thread and check.
As far as being single, I'd have to say that it's far preferable to the last relationship I was in. I took more knives in the back from that treacherous liar than I have in many years of dating before it. I still hold out hopes that there will be someone decent to share my life with at some point, though.
If it comes down to being in a relationship like my last or none at all, though, I'll gladly pick none at all.
