Worth it or just a gimmick. Got a couple 3D BluRay players, but no 3D TV. Any really good 3D movies? "Gravity" seems like it may be interesting in 3D for the beauty.

I've had one for a few years now... gimmick, sorta... but if the movie was done properly in 3D, then it really is a hoot watching it that way. I, Robot, Avatar and one of my favs, How to Train Your Dragon was great... lol. The investment is the TV... but now the big thing is 4K. These guys develop tv's faster than I can wear out a pair of skivvies these days... :)

    Enjoy!!

I have a 3D Bluray and 3D TV. Yes, I think it is worth it. The movies look so much better than in 2D. It is also a good talking point too.,

    If I had to choose between 3D and 4K, I'd go 4K. I've had a 3D for about a year, there are a few things I hate about 3D....

    1. You can't buy just the 3D BluRay disk, you have to get the $30+ "Complete" Pack with DVD, Digital, 2D BluRay, and 3D BluRay disks.

    2. 3D is technically 720p, every other line is an alternate eye. Barely noticeable really.

    3. Active shutter glasses... try sitting through Hobbit with these things on and you'll get what I mean.

3b.Active Shutter Glasses are expensive, easily break, need batteries replaced every once in a while, etc.

    4. To really be worth it, a 3D TV really needs to fill up your perception range. I guess that is to say that you need to make sure if you're sitting 6' from your TV that you have a 56"+ set to really "Immerse" yourself in the picture. Otherwise it's just a window with a deep feild of view.

Some things I like about 3D.

    1. Netflix has 3D movies! Most of it is direct to video, but hey at least you have some great nature flix to show off the set to friends.

    2. The Pirate Bay has 3D movies! Nuff said.

Now here's 2 things I dislike about the 2 things I just posted:

    1. The Netflix app that runs on the TV (Samsung Smart TV), does not support 3D. In order for me to stream 3D, I have to use my PS3.

    2. 3D downloaded movies are 2-12Gigs depending on audio/video quality. On shitty internet, you'll probably get the lowest streaming quality.

I like my 3D TV, make sure you get a 120hz TV, they really make a huge difference, not to mention you'll get better framerates.

Personally I'd save up for a 4K TV though, According to CES this year, 3D is pretty much dead.

Some do look that way. The three I mentioned were of high quality and enjoyable. There are a few that gives you a headache too. Just have to be selective.. :)

My new HDTV looked REALLY weird out of the box, the 120hz has an amazing range of brightness that (if your tv isn't calibrated correctly) can make everything look fake.

Suggest your friend look up HDTV Calibration online, there's a great lifehacker article (http://bit.ly/1eDrGj6) that uses the AVS HD 709 Calibration Disc, basically you download a file, burn it to DVD-R and it'll play in your bluray player. It has a bunch of test patterns along with some videos of how to use them correctly.

Made a world of difference with my setup.

the site you get too with the AVS disk has information on what formats you can use on what devices. I don't know if a USB stick would work as the file is an HD movie.

Just looked, there's an MP4 version with a list of devices that can read the file, and what media you have to use. I'm using the AVCHD file, you can burn it to DVDr and it plays on most bluray players.

Agreed. I have zero interest in 3D. I have become a HD snob, so naturally I'm
very interested in 4K. I have seen several of them in the store that have me drooling.

I have decided to wait until there is media for 4K and the prices come down. Part of the issue is all my TVs are connected to PCs with video cards that can do 1080P just fine, but will probably not handle 4K. I will have to upgrade more than just the TV to get things working.
