Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2023 December 3 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/afHfMMC-MJE?rel=0 Moon Setting Behind Teide Volcano Video Credit & [3]Copyright: Daniel López ([4]El Cielo de Canarias); Music: Piano della Moon ([5]Dan Silva) Explanation: These people are not in danger. What is coming down from the left is just the Moon, far in the distance. [6]Luna appears so large here because she is being [7]photographed through a telescopic lens. What is moving is mostly [8]the Earth, whose spin causes [9]the Moon to slowly disappear behind [10]Mount Teide, a volcano in the [11]Canary Islands off the northwest coast of [12]Africa. The people pictured are [13]16 kilometers away and many are facing the camera because they are watching [14]the Sun rise behind the photographer. It is not a [15]coincidence that a [16]full moon rises just when the [17]Sun sets because the Sun is always on the opposite side of the sky from a full moon. The [18]featured video was made in 2018 during the full [19]Milk Moon. The video is not [20]time-lapse -- this was really how fast [21]the Moon was setting.
