My current project is a web front end for net news. It’s supposed to be
super simple. The main purpose is to make things linkable for web browsers without net news support.

It looks very good, I can read those newsgroups. But how do I post? The
site sais /an account/ is required, but where do I get one, or
credentials on which NNTP server shall I type in?

Some of the Tildeverse's news servers have additional groups and
(access) rules. You may need accounts on the related tilde nodes and/or
their news server. I do not know a summary page about which news
servers are different in which aspects. Maybe our master news server
wrangler (or what was that semi official title?) can enlighten us a bit
    more?

You having omitted any quotation, I had a double take realising it was
in answer to me. My question was not about the Tildeverse NNTP servers,
but rather about Alex's web-to-NNTP gateway. It prompts for a login and password for posting, but not for a newsserver, which means that /some/ newsserver is implied, and I wonder which one. If I enter my credentials
    for news.tilde.club, it fails with:

Oops. Looks like posting to local.test failed!

withholding the actuall error message from whatever NNTP server the
gateway leads to. I don't understand.

    ~kensanata's Campaignwiki.org netnews server
    is technically not a part of Tildeverse Netnews federation [1];
    but peers with Cosmic.voyage
    for the following newsgroup namespaces:

    - cosmic.*
    - campaignwiki.*

And it peers to the USENET at large
    (via quux.org)
    for the following newsgroup namespace:

    - rec.games.frp.*

    And lastly (for the record),
    I, ~yeti, and you (~ant)
    are currently using Tilde.club's netnews server [2];
while ~kensanata posted the thread start
    via Cosmic.voyage's own netnews server.

    Regards,
    ~xwindows

    [1]
Tildeverse Netnews' newsgroups namespace is tilde.*

    [2]
Which you (~ant) could connect from 'net out there
    to <nntps://news.tilde.club/>
    using any NNTPS-capable newsreaders;
and authenticate using your Tilde.club username and password
    for posting access.

I've no ~club account/password. Seems ~institute users can write based
on "their" address? Ok, my GNUS is at home, but it ssh+nc hops over
~institute to reach the news server.

Given ~institute's stability (downtime basically only for OS upgrades),
    that really feels good enough.

Thanks. This is not at all obvious from the web-interface, which says
merely that "the groups and posts it shows are from /a/ news server",
and does not say at all what server is that, for the user to know what credentials are expected. I ask ~kensata to consider amending the
description to be more specific, e.g.:

The groups and posts it shows are from the Campagin Wiki news server*
and you need an account** on it to post.

    * with a link to the server and
    ** instructions about registration.

(Pardon mine English, but the idea should be clear)

Yes, I know. In fact, I was a bit disappointed to learn that the ~club newsserver required TLS for posting, instead of supporing it as an
option. This prevents me from using it with my good, old, and beloved
Sylpheed -- a mail- and newsreader in one elegant GUI program, which
seems orphaned now, and about to be dropped from *nix distributions.

No major public NNTP servers I know reject plain port:119 connections.
Are they dangerous for the user or for the server? If the former, then
I am for giving the user the choice and the attendant responsibility.

Yes, this is well documented in the Wiki.

Within ~club's local network TLS is not required to post. So you could
use an ssh tunnel, for example.

Thanks for the suggestion, Mr. Greenhouse. Considering how unreliable
my internet connection is, it may not prove a much better option than
accessing news from inside the ~club (which practice is encouraged), but
I will try it if I manage to set up an SSH tunnel from Windows XP...

Makes sense. When I get back to it, I‘ll take a look at the exact wording. Since the web site is far more popular than the newsgroups, I am assuming
    that most people start here:

    https://campaignwiki.org/wiki/Forum

But yeah, to be clear about it: you ask for an account by sending me an
email and I‘ll set it up.

    Cheers
    Alex
