I Like Steely Dan

There's really nothing I know of quite like the music of Steely Dan.
Donald Fagen, I.G.A is another good one, I like the way you can't
really grasp what they're saying unless you listen intently. The topics
they're covering are quite controversial to say the least! Western
World, Bad Sneakers, Everyone's Gone To The Movies, Babylon Sisters, ...
His voice is so distinctive, you immediately recognize it.
I think about the music I used to like and no longer like so much.. I
mean, I like Canned Heat but not like I used to, and Black Sabbath just
sounds like a lot of silly noise to me. Steely Dan has been one of the
few bands that I enjoy just as much, if not more, today than I did 30
years ago.
I don't really care for "Dirty Work" or "Gaucho" and usually skip
those, but I find almost everything else they sing to be excellent work
music and I enjoy listening to it while coding on some boring part of a
project I have to trudge through.
There is good modern music, but nothing like Steely Dan, and nothing
you'll ever see being pushed by the mainstream. I've found an entire
genre of music "western soundtracks" that I really enjoy for example.
(Check out Federale and some guy called "samuraiguitarist" writes some
truly incredible western soundtrack versions of pop tunes like Ozzy
Osbourne's crazy train (done as a western!) and Michael Jackson.
But I don't think we'll ever see anything like Steely Dan.
That's not to say there isn't decent music. You just won't hear the
good modern stuff on the radio, but it's out there.
