Welp, let's see if posting in the news group from my local machine
    actually works.

I'm also not so sure how to best get new messages from the server?

    Does tin(1) handle this automatically?

Is the active file being automatically updated whilst the client is
    open?

    All mysteries to me.

Technically it gets the messages when you select one, and you
select one from the list that it gets when you select a group. The
list of groups is refreshed by default when you start Tin.

It will check for new articles for the groups that you're
subscribed to at start-up, and after a configurable number of
seconds while running. Press "s" at the list of all groups
(accessed by pressing "y") to subscribe to a group.

    All mysteries to me.

    Yes, all coming through fine.
