Ms. Sally Mulligan of Coral Springs, Florida, read it and decided to apply
for one of the jobs that most Americans are not willing to do.

She submitted her application for a job in a Florida lemon grove, but seemed far too qualified for the job.

She has a liberal arts degree from the University of Michigan and a master's degree from Michigan State University.

For a number of years, she had worked as a social worker and also as a school teacher.

The foreman studied her application, frowned, and said, "I see that you are well educated, and have an impressive resume.

"However, I have to ask you, have you had any actual experience in picking lemons?"

"Well, as a matter of fact, I have," she said.

"I've been divorced three times, owned two Chryslers, voted twice for Obama, and once for Hillary."

She started work yesterday.

Jokes aside, impressive resumes hurt you quite a bit if you are trying to get a low qualification job. When I went out of college and found out that real engineering jobs were out of my reach - no offer in the wild for junior engineers I could realistically take - I thought I could try applying for less qualified jobs in manufacturing industry in order to reach an engineering position via internal promotion, eventually.

Lots of recruiters looking for employees for really simple tasks (like data input, meassuring pieces or moving boxes) will reject you right away as soon as they see you have a degree in anything.

Have I already mentioned I hate my country?

I know that from first-hand experience. I was trying to get a job as a
CNC operator ($30 an hour) but they flat-out refused to hire me because
I have a college degree and 30 years in IT. I think they thought I was
going to go find another job somewhere else in IT. I was starting to
really get frustrated so I took a job at the VA as a bed cleaner just
to try another career. Then I became disabled.

Ironically, I am now a US federal government "Schedule A" applicant
which means that I can apply at any government agency and get a job I'm qualified for -without an interview-.

I won't do that because I'd probably lose my Social Security benefits
(when I get them) permanently because I would be considered employable.
I was declared by my doctor as being unemployable due to my physical
condition.

Have I already mentioned I hate my country?

From what I understand, this phenomenon we've gone through is an
international one though it's slightly different in every country.

Did I mention that I've been a victim of ageism in IT hiring practices?
That was always fun to deal with.
