The server I am thinking about putting my BBS on is a HP ProLiant ML110
G6 that I picked up off of eBay for $114, shipping from the Atlanta area included. Great older server and it works just fine. Unfortunately, I
can't upgrade iLO unless I have a paying subscription and this old
version uses SSH v1 so I dare not use it.

My HP DL380 G6 servers ran for many years. This past year I moved to some massive 4U Supermicro servers.

I remember setting my DL380 G6 iLO up and was blown away they wanted a registration for it. Let me know if you want to know how to get around that problem.

A DL380 seems a bit overkill for a BBS, considering how much energy those things suck up, they're awfully loud and just one of them will heat my 11x11ft office to over 90F if I let it run overnight!

+1 to avoiding the G6 equipment. G8 and newer is still quite serviceable, but older than that and you're paying to heat your place more than the performance you'll get out of it. I have several DL380s of various denominations here, but have retired anything older than g8 due to the comparative lack of performance, and the issues with trying to update firmware/ilo.

That said, while a server is overkill for a bbs at this point, if you run something like proxmox and virtualize everything, then a single lightweight lxc container does fairly well for bbs duty and you can setup plex and other niceties in other containers.

I think I have a Proliant ML350 in mu Electronic Junk Cabinet, and there is no way on earth I put that thing in service again unless it is an emergency. It eats power like crazy and makes more noise than an orgy of nukes. Also, the RAID controller is toasted.

My mini home lab is a Thinkpad with a broken keyboard. It's got an i7 CPU
and 16 GB of RAM; I put a 750 GB SATA drive in it. On top of it is a Netgear Nighthawk router with a 2TB SATA drive connected, and it's sharing to the Proxmox server via CIFS. It's running DD-WRT and Entware, is hosting my
media files for my Smart TVs and it's going to be a reverse proxy for my network when I get it configured. The router was a Goodwill find for $10.

That whole kit probably cost $100, is silent, and has a built-in UPS. I'm running Proxmox with a couple of test environments on it, a Lubuntu VM for torrenting, DOS/Windows 3.1 for retro goodness, and pi-hole.

I was worried about ESXi's hardware compatibility, Proxmox loaded up in 10 minutes and supported everything without complaint.

I could easily move the BBS over to it, and probably will do so when the bare-metal hardware running the BBS fails. I'll probably add a USB ethernet adapter I have laying around and play with VLANs on my firewall to separate the BBS from the rest of the network, as an exercise.
