My Aunt does this. She likes the look & feel of Apple
products but has never taken the time to learn MacOS.

She had a MacBook which I helped her install Windows on,
but then screen wasn't big enough. So instead of just
getting a docking station or plugging a monitor into it,
she went out and bought a 27" iMac. Then I get the call to
come over & help put Windows on it...

    How did THAT work out?

    What happend the MackBook?

The new Win11 seems to boast a toolbar at the bottom of the
screen that is reminiscent of the way Mac does things.

It works fine, you can use bootcamp to install & run windows natively. She uses a windows logitech mouse & keyboard combo so the ones it came with are just sitting in the box.

This thing cost at least C$2500, would have been a hell of a lot cheaper to buy a 27" monitor and a Windows desktop (or better yet, use her existing MacBook).

    What happend the MackBook?

It sat in a box for about a year and then I convinced her to sell it on Kijiji.

I've been meaning to download the release preview and play around with it on VirtualBox. As long as I can load classic shell on it everything should be ok.

Ah.. Boot Camp, I've heard of it. Sounds like a fine solution
or people who what to use Mac hardware with their familiar
    Windows progs.

I tried Mint on a legacy iMac that I am trying to revive, but I
only got this far before it simply locked up:

I've love to use this machine as a media display monitor in my

That's a wealthy aunt. Stay friends! You might inherit

How is she using the Mac most of the time? Is it just for
browsing over the internet and movies? Is she using it for
    anything like photography?

A friend of mine has been 100% Mac most of his computer life,
but he stays with 100% MacOS and Mac progs. His main utility
for the machine is photography and some music. Wrt music, he's
digressed to Spotify since he can then control his amplifier/
player with his iPhone or the Mac. He owns a pair of Klipsch
Heresy speakers (an earlier model from the 80's) that sounded
absolutely wonderful when he demo'd some classical tracks from
    an LP of Holt's Planets.

Is it still in preview state? I am reading that Win11 will
only be available for 64bit machines, but "FREE" to Win10
    users.

She does "the books" for my uncle who's a plumber, so she mainly uses Office, Email & Quickbooks? (I think). All of these programs are available for MacOS but they're "not the same".

A friend of mine has been 100% Mac most of his computer life,

I switched to a MacBook Pro a few years back and made myself use only MacOS programs to accomplish the tasks I wanted, I actually got pretty good finding my way around the interface and then the command line as well.

Then MacOS Catalina & then Big Sur came along and rendered some of the programs I was using useless, one of them (Parallels) charges for each new version and I wasn't about to shell out another $80 ~seven months after buying the previous one, so I switched back to a PC (this X1 Carbon I'm using now) and got a pretty good price for the MacBook on Kijiji.

Yeah, you can sign up for free to the "Insiders Preview" and download the preview release. I think I read something about it being released Fall 2021, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Last I looked there was a 32bit ISO available for download, but I haven't downloaded either to try them out.

Yes.. I've heard that there are subtle diffs in the Mac
versions of those progs. The differences can be annoying to
someone used to the Windows versions.

Places like https://softwarekeep.ca offer inexpensive versions
    of things like that. I got a Win7 Pro 32bit for about $25 a
    few years ago.

..Last I looked there was a 32bit ISO available for

I read about the 32bit too, but the MS links to it were gone by
the time I heard about it.

The first thing I'd change is that crazy blue puffy thing they
    promote as the desktop background.

Anyway.. I'm sticking to Win7 on my meager PCs.

But.. it only if I could get that legacy iMac up and running,
    that would be sweet.

I had to get used to MS Office for Mac, it's not the same as the Windows version. Some things I like better on the Mac version, others not so much.

One thing I NEVER got working on the Mac was running an envelope through the printer with Word. It would just never work right, it was always print sideways, or off set or sometimes not at all. Load up a Windows VM fire up Word for Windows and BOOM! Perfect printed envelope every time.

But... did you *have* to upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur? Why

I guess I didn't *have* to, but some of the new features are neat like full iPad apps on MacOS, using your iPad as a second screen, etc.

I sometimes buy Windows keys from places like that for VMs I want to keep around for awhile.

It looks like they're still there, but Microsoft makes you jump through hoops just to download a frickin' ISO.

Anyway.. I'm sticking to Win7 on my meager PCs.

I miss Win 7 sometimes with how "simple" it seems now. Even in Win 10 I sometimes dig through the cruft to get to the "real" settings (Control Panel, System Properties, Disk Management, etc).

I would never imagine nor expect a Mac product to misbehave
like that. (Apple/Mac being associated with quality and
everything, that is.) Did you scour the user groups for
    solutions?

In Windows, usually a printer issue is resolved in a driver
update. Not sure how a Mac system would take care of a printer
    problem.

Not surprised that the MS version worked. Afterall, the Mac
version of Word was probably just a quick recompile "for
Windows" without properly checking full functionality?

Win7 simply operates smooth as butter. Both of my Win7/64 Pro
pcs (one laptop and one DT) only ever go into Hibernation. I
rarely need to do a Shutdown or Restart.

[I have a 3rd pc with Win7/32 Pro, but I rarely use it at this
time. It too is currently in Hibernate only]

I'm not sure how my Win7's are affected by the recent Printer
Spooler vulnerability. I think the news said that ALL versions
    of Windows were affected.

It's actually really different, if it was just a port of the Windows version I would have expected it to work better.

Yeah, very true. At least I got to dive into MacOS and learn more about it before coming back to PC-Land.

As a personal user you can use 0Patch for free and have your Win7 machine (somewhat) protected against PrintNightmare (among other things):

    https://0patch.com/

I say "somewhat" because the patches produced my Microsoft don't appear to fully fix the issue and even more vulnerabilities are being discovered in the print spooler. At least with 0Patch it checks in with the server and applies the patches without the need for a reboot.

    Thanks for the 0patch tip.

Meanwhile, I learned that the PrinterNightmare issue is only a
problem when someone triggers the vulnerability within the LAN.
It's not something that can occur from the outside.

    August,

I'm not sure how my Win7's are affected by the recent Printer
Spooler vulnerability. I think the news said that ALL versions
    of Windows were affected.

I liked 98, XP, and 7 (never used 2000 or Vista). I use a utility
from IObit software called "Start Menu 8", which makes the Start
Menu look like Windows 7 or 8 instead of Windows 10.

I saw that note as well on "PrintNightmare". I normally leave my
printer off, unless I'm here printing stuff. If I have it on at
bootup, the computer seems to hang at bootup.

Lately, some programs seem to "go to sleep", but I've disabled
the USB sleep deal in Windows 10. While my laptop (running 64-bit
Windows 10) will handle the "free upgrade" to Windows 11, the BBS
computer, running Windows 10 32-bit, will not...as the CPU isn't
fast enough, and there will be no more 32-bit support with Windows
    11. So much for "no new versions after Windows 10". :P
