• Vaccines vs Horses

    Hi guys.

Yesterday I gave some tetanus vaccine to my horses and one of them has gotten very sick as a result. She always has a bad reaction to the vaccine, but this time it has been worse than usual.

She has trouble lowering her head to graze and she also finds it difficult to walk. She is depresive right now and I find it heart breaking. I have had to hung her lunch in a high net so she can eat without having to lower her head.

She is much better today but you can tell she is not feeling right.

I feel like shit because I am the bastard that stuck the needle in her.

    Blues are over.

Aren't there alternative formulations? Of course, the suspension/preservative/ingredients could be changing from year
to year, and batch to batch.

I was going to ask where is that particular shot supposed to be
administered - the neck? Sounds like her whole muscle system
    is affected.

But good to hear she's doing better already. She will certainly
forgive you as soon as the pain and discomfort is history and
as long as you distract her with treats and the best food. :D

There are alternatives, but the issue is that getting a vaccine here is hard and requires a bunch of paperwork, and local dealer here only carries this one. Actually, the one I use is supposed to be the less aggressive and have the least side effects.

The stab goes in the neck. The problem is that I think she has a sore neck and pain is irradiating to her shoulder, which is why she has a bit of trouble walking.

She is getting extra apples, and that seems to be helping her mood. THe only issue is I cannot stay around her all day. I have to leave a bunch of days per week for job and leave my parents taking care of the horses, and they don't do much of a great job at that.

Hello, guys. An update regarding the horse that got a bad side effect from a tetanus vaccine.

She is fine now for the most part. Now she is eating and walking normaly. It has taken her about 6 days to get well, but worries seem to be over.

Thanks for bearing with my horse and I.

    Thanks.

She just gave me a love horse kiss. She got a bit excited and took a small part of my beard.

The vaccine is to be given once a year, in theory. I should search for a different one, but there is not much to choose around here. Getting the vaccine to begin with is a paperwork shitstorm.

The main issue is that it is not the sort of vaccine I'd skip since domestic horses are very likely to get exposed, and tetanus is devastating. I have already stopped giving them vaccines for things that are low risk because the paperwork is not worth it.

Given the fact my horses is what I care for the most in life, that is saying something.
