• Abandoned BBS Door Games

From Tim Whitson@618:300/40 to All on Tue Jul 27 21:39:28 2021
I greatly appreciate the door game authors of old. But a lot of them disappeared without a trace. I am wondering what people think about sharing registration files for games that are no longer supported? Maybe setup a trade area where Sysops can trade game codes.

If you are a door developer of old, please support your games. Offer registration files, hell you might make a buck or two.

You do know about bbsfiles.com, right? Go take a look there.

I do not allow this on Micronet for a variety of reasons but nothing personal about that. You should take a look in my BBS file area; there's a particular file directory that you might like.

bbsfiles.com has a lot of doors that he can create regkeys from but you have to be careful as Doug (the guy that runs that site) has been caught charging to generate keys for doors that have free registration keygens made publicly available by the author.

AFAIK, besides Shawn Highfield, I'm the only other door author in Micronet. Nearly all of the rest have disappeared, moving on from BBSing when they couldn't make a profit.

Fun fact: an older nagware unregisterable door is what caused me to create my first BBS door, "The Magic Oracle", back in 1998.

Have you thought about writing your own BBS doors?

I have registered several through bbsfiles.com. I've even tried to track a few authors down by running a Google search. I'm looking for Carlos Garcia for BBS Roulette. I know the game runs like it is but I'd like it registered. The ones I'd like to register are Wraith of Kahlal. If the authors would realize there is a market, maybe they'd start registering again. I understand some
did not keep the programs, which is a shame.

(Maximus likes to slaughter quoted lines for some reason)

Sadly, many BBS door authors are dead also. Some wrote the doors using pseudonyms, such as Tony Street, the author of "Death By Adrenaline". He came on my BBS and told me to crack the door because he sold the door code to another author who promptly disappeared.

Heck, I've had door authors give me code over the years and it's sadly disappeared from all my moves, redos, and other things. I'm finally somewhat stable enough for me to write my own doors again.

    Later,
    Sean

If I had spent a ton of time and my software had its day and I walked away from it I would hope people would figure out how to crack it or share registration. but I couldn't speak for everyone.

I keep bugging Seth for another LorD poster. mine got lost in a rampage of violence.
