30 January 1972 - NORTHERN IRELAND SUFFERS "BLOODY SUNDAY": Bloody
Sunday, or the Bogside Massacre, was a massacre on 30 January 1972
when British soldiers shot 26 unarmed civilians during a protest march
in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland. Fourteen people
died: thirteen were killed outright, while the death of another man four
months later was attributed to his injuries. Many of the victims were
shot while fleeing from the soldiers, and some were shot while trying to
help the wounded. Other protesters were injured by shrapnel, rubber
bullets, or batons, two were run down by British Army vehicles, and some
    were beaten.

UDD NOTES THAT: The British "Black & Tans" Soldiers seem to have taken
a page from the Chicago, IL USA police riots during 1968's Presidential Nominating Convention. According to the Chicago Mayor, Richard J. Daley,
"We are not here to prevent disorder, we are here to preserve it."

Add the cream, mix with the pan juices, and taste for
    seasoning.

Put back into the half shells and serve hot.

17 June 1972 - BREAK-IN AT THE WATERGATE HOTEL ENDS IN ARRESTS: Five
men, including US President Richard Nixon's security chief, are arrested
after breaking into the Democratic National Committee's headquarters at
the Watergate Complex in Washington, DC. What Nixon's press secretary
later dubs a 'third-rate burglary' will be the undoing of a presidency.

After the five perpetrators were arrested, the press and the Department
of Justice connected the cash found on them at the time to the Committee
for the Re-Election of the President. Further investigations, along with revelations during subsequent trials of the burglars, led the House of Representatives to grant the U.S. House Judiciary Committee additional investigative authority-to probe into "certain matters within its jurisdiction," and led the Senate to create the U.S. Senate Watergate Committee, which held hearings. Witnesses testified that Nixon had
approved plans to cover up his administration's involvement in the
burglary, and that there was a voice-activated taping system in the Oval Office. Throughout the investigation, Nixon's administration resisted
its probes, and this led to a constitutional crisis. The Senate
Watergate hearings were broadcast "gavel-to-gavel" nationwide by PBS and aroused public interest.

The use of the suffix -gate after an identifying term has since become synonymous with public scandal,
