02 November 1947 - HOWARD HUGHES FLIES THE 'SPRUCE GOOSE': Howard
Hughes pilots his huge, multimillion dollar wooden plane, the 'Spruce
Goose,' in California. Designed to transport troops during WWII, the
aircraft is completed two years late, after the war has ended. This
short test flight is the only time the Goose will fly.

    Title: Howard's Roast Goose
    Categories: Poultry, Herbs, Vegetables, Wine
    Yield: 9 Servings

5 kg Goose; fat trimmed &
    - discarded, legs removed;
    - wings, neck and excess
    - carcass removed & chopped
    - in 2cm/1" pieces
    2 Bay leaves
    5 Thyme sprigs
    1 cl Garlic; sliced
    White pepper
    2 tb Goose fat
    1 sm Onion; in 3cm/1 1/4" pieces
    1 Carrot; in 3cm/1 1/4"
    - pieces
    25 g Celery; in 3cm/1 1/4"
    - pieces
    85 g Unsalted butter; softened
    200 ml Port
    100 ml Madeira wine
    1/4 ts Arrowroot, if needed
    Sprigs of fresh herbs; such
    - as bay, rosemary and thyme
    - to serve

Take the goose out of the fridge 2 hrs before roasting.

    Set oven to 150ºC/300ºF/gas 2.

Chop 1 bay leaf and the leaves from 2 thyme sprigs
together. Mix with the garlic, 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt
and 2 pinches of white pepper, then rub into the flesh
    of the goose legs.

Heat the goose fat in a large flameproof roasting tin on
a medium heat. Add the wings, neck and excess carcass
and cook for 5 mins until lightly golden. Do not colour
the bones too much, or the resulting jus will taste
bitter. Add the onion, carrot and celery, and continue
    to brown for 3 mins.

Place the goose legs, skin-side up, in the roasting tin
with the bones and vegetables. Cover the tin tightly
with foil and roast for 1 hr. Rub the goose crown with
the butter and season well with sea salt and freshly
ground white pepper. Remove the tin from the oven and
increase the temperature to 230C/450ºF/gas 8. Remove
the foil from the tin and sit the goose crown on top of
the legs and bones, which will help the heat to
circulate the crown, cooking it more evenly. Roast for
30 mins until the crown is golden.

    Reduce oven to 150ºC/300ºF/gas 2.

Add the remaining bay leaf, 3 thyme sprigs and 300ml hot
water to the tin to lift the caramelised juices from the
pan and the bones. (It will also keep the goose moist.)
Continue to cook for 30-35 mins, basting every 10 mins
with the juices, until a probe thermometer inserted into
    the breast reads 55C.

Remove the crown from the oven and wrap tightly in foil.
Rest for 30 mins to allow the meat to become tender.
Continue to cook the goose legs during this time.
Meanwhile, heat the Port and Madeira in a small pan and
simmer to reduce by half. Remove the goose legs from the
oven, then place on a tray, wrap in foil and leave to
    rest in a warm place.

Pour off the excess fat from the roasting tin and
reserve (see tip, below). Remove the bones and veg from
the tin and place the tin on a medium heat. Bring to the
boil and stir to lift the juices. Add the reduced
alcohol. Taste and adjust the seasoning if required,
then pour the resting juices which have collected under
the goose into the jus. If the sauce is a little thin,
mix the arrowroot with 1 tsp cold water, then add a
little at a time to ensure that it does not become too
thick. Sieve into a warmed gravy boat. Scatter herbs
over a serving platter, loosely reassemble the goose on
top and serve with the sauce.

    Title: Pac-Man Brussels Sprouts
    Categories: Five, Vegetables, Novelty
    Yield: 4 servings

    18 oz Brussels sprouts
    Extra-virgin olive oil
3 cl Garlic; smashed, skin left on

    Set oven @ 375ºF/190ºC.

Using a paring knife, cut the brussels spouts in half,
and then cut out the core of each. This allows the
leaves to separate a bit while cooking and get nice and
    crispy.

Toss the sprouts with a bit of olive oil, spread on a
baking sheet along with the smashed garlic cloves and
sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake 20 minutes or so,
until nice and golden. And crispy.

5 June 1947 - US SECRETARY OF STATE GEORGE MARSHALL OUTLINES THE
"MARSHALL PLAN" TO REBUILD WESTERN EUROPE: The United States transferred
$13.3 billion (equivalent of $173 billion in 2023) in economic recovery programs to Western European economies after the end of World War II.
Replacing an earlier proposal for a Morgenthau Plan, it operated for
four years beginning on April 3, 1948. The goals of the United States
were to rebuild war-torn regions, remove trade barriers, modernize
industry, improve European prosperity and prevent the spread of
communism. The Marshall Plan proposed the reduction of interstate
barriers and the economic integration of the European Continent while
also encouraging an increase in productivity as well as the adoption of
    modern business procedures.

The Marshall Plan aid was divided among the participant states roughly
on a per capita basis. A larger amount was given to the major industrial powers, as the prevailing opinion was that their resuscitation was
essential for the general European revival. Somewhat more aid per capita
was also directed toward the Allied nations, with less for those that
had been part of the Axis or remained neutral. The largest recipient of Marshall Plan money was the United Kingdom (receiving about 26% of the
total). The next highest contributions went to France (18%) and West
Germany (11%). Some eighteen European countries received Plan
benefits. Although offered participation, the Soviet Union refused
Plan benefits and also blocked benefits to Eastern Bloc countries, such
    as Romania and Poland.

08 July 1947 - PAPERS REPORT A PECULIAR CRASH IN NEW MEXICO DESERT:
Newspapers report the capture of a "flying saucer" at a ranch near the
town of Roswell and question the US military's story about the crash of
a weather balloon. In the 1990s the military will finally reveal that a top-secret nuclear test-monitoring balloon was recovered at the site.

The "Roswell incident", or simply "Roswell", was the July 1947 recovery
of metallic and rubber debris from a military balloon by Roswell Army
Air Field personnel, who issued a press release announcing possession of
a "flying disc". Decades later, conspiracy theories claimed that debris
from an alien spaceship had been covered up by the government. In
response, in 1994 the United States Air Force published a report
concluding the crashed object was a top secret nuclear test surveillance balloon from Project Mogul.

The Roswell incident took place during the flying disc craze of 1947,
sparked by widespread media coverage of pilot Kenneth Arnold's alleged sighting. Amid hundreds of reports nationwide, on July 8, 1947, Roswell
Army Air Field's press release was broadcast via wire transmission. The
Army quickly retracted the release, falsely stating the crashed object
was merely a conventional weather balloon

Categories: Asian, Poultry, Chilies, Citrus, Curry
    Yield: 6 Servings

    3 tb Oil
    3 md Onions; sliced thin
    3 cl Garlic; pressed
    1 In fresh gingerroot; grated
    4 W/hole fresh red chilies;
    - seeded
    2 Pods cardamom
    2 W/hole cloves
    2 Peppercorns
    1 Stick cinnamon
    1 ts Salt; to taste
1 c Fresh ripe tomatoes; sliced
    - thin
    1/4 ts Ground turmeric
3 lb Chicken; in 8 serving pcs
    - loose skin, fat discarded
    1/4 c Fresh coriander; chopped
    3 c Coconut milk
    1 Lemon juice

A spicy curry does not necessarily mean that the amount of
incendiary chile is the paramount seasoning. The Bene Israel
use garlic, ginger, cardamom, clove, cinnamon, and turmeric
to produce intensity. Coconut milk also is important to
    mellow and blend the whole.

In a pan, heat the oil and stir-fry the onions over moderate
heat until they are golden brown. Add the garlic, ginger,
chilies, cardamom, cloves, peppercorns, cinnamon, and salt.
Continue to stir-fry for 3 minutes more. Add the tomatoes
and turmeric and mix well for 2 minutes.

Add the chicken and fresh coriander and stir for 3 minutes
until the chicken changes color. Pour in the coconut milk
and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan
and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the
chicken is tender and the sauce has thickened. Stir in the
lemon juice. This curry does have ample sauce.

Serve hot with rice, salad, and cooked vegetables.

    Makes 6 servings.
