Dude - you must have known him much better than I - while I enjoyed bbsfiles.com, I didn't really known the chap; but I know he was loved in the BBS community.

It sounds like his sickness was long-lived and - do we really need to describe that as horribly and... I just think that his legacy and name deserves a bit more than your flippant attitude towards his death.

yeah he was out to make a buck for most of his run, so he did have stuff that wasn't released on his site. basically what he did was get code gens and serial numbers from prominant people in bbsing and put it all in one place. he organized it. then he would make money from selling keys and use it to pay authors who wanted to give up their source.

i probably do have everything from his site, it's just thrown in with everything else.

they enjoyed taking what he had to offer, but when he was gone they didnt give a shit and moved on. it's a very impersonal thing.

Dennis Ritchie may have preferred it that way. I don't know.

I definitely noticed and noted on Dennis' death (glancing at the copy of K&R on my desk now), but I don't know that he wanted the kind of fame and adulation that Steve Jobs received during his life and after.

Dennis and many other relatively unknowns are definitely technical pioneers and the technically-inclined will continue to learn of and credit their contributions for decades to come. But it's kind of like "famous" physicists or mathemeticians, it's really their peer community that mostly recognizes their achievements and mourns the loss, often quietly.

Doug, to my knowledge, they were not fighting cancer and didn't have any
other known pre-existing health issues that lead to it.

She had been in the office just the day before, so we were all pretty
shocked.

But we also need to set the history books straight. Otherwise people will keep thinking that it's people like Jobs who are the innovaters.

think of this as an opportunity. those people with the time and ability can reverse engineer most of these doorgames.

it just isnt about ability, though. they have to know what makes the doorgame successful.

with lord i think what made it successful is the many in game modules you can install and all the cool addons. you can really build the game into something better and fun for the users. the clone doesn't have that. it just looks and works someone what the original game.

Yeah the Rebel Kingdom even from the site rip has that same key I bought from him and it just says "sorry, this key has timed out." or something along those lines.
