Check out "The Founder" with Michael Keaton for a great dramatisation of
the founding of McDonalds and why the buy and lease back the land.

I never heard of this docu drama. I like Keaton, but not so much McDonald's. There is nothing that would make me want to eat any
    of their stuff.

Oh believe me, you won't leave the film with postive feelings towards Mickey D's.

I watched it, and I felt negatively more for Ray Kroc specifically, rather than McDonalds. Even the title of the movie refers to how he claimed he was the founder of McDonalds, even though he wasn't even involved with the first rstaurant.

I'm going to give it a shot this weekend. Meanwhile, I learned
that the song "Boom, Like That" by Mark Knopfler, from his album
Shangri-La was inspired by Kroc's biography: Grinding It Out

The lyrics of the song are spot on.

I've listened to the song so many times (primarily because of the
music) but I had no idea that it was about the McDonald story -
'cuz I really didn't pay attention to them very much.

"Or my name's not kroc that's kroc with a 'k'
Like 'crocodile' but not spelled that way, yeah
It's dog eat dog rat eat rat
    Kroc-style boom, like that"

"Oughtta be a one of these in every town
These boys have got the touch
It's clean as a whistle and it don't cost much
Wham, bam you don't wait long
    Shake, fries patty, you're gone
And how about that friendly name?
Heck, every little thing oughtta stay the same
Or my name's not kroc that's kroc with a 'k'
Like 'crocodile' but not spelled that way, now
It's dog eat dog rat eat rat
    Kroc-style boom, like that"

The song will never be the same for me anymore.

The McDonald brothers were out to sell a framework. Ray Kroc was out to sell
a turn key restaurant. George (Taco) Bell and the founder of Burger King
    were McDonald brothers customers.

Yep. Mark Knopfler is one of my favorite musicians. Soon after I bought his Shangri-La album, I was looking up the lyrics/meaning of "Boom, Like That" and learned it's about Ray Kroc.

Since I looked it up fairly soon, I knew what it was about. I agree the lyrics are spot on. The song has a catchy tune, and I think the fact that it's about Ray Kroc of McDonalds makes it kinda funny. :)

The McDonald brothers created the concept of fast food by combining a limited memnu of easy to make items with a kitchen that was optimized for cooking and assembling the food. To them, it was about selling the means for an individua l to start their own business. The money stopped there.

Ray discovered franchising gave him the edge of having cash flowing back from all these self made bosses.

The franchisees will be required to source their materials from the
corporation versus buying them local. This also ensured a level of
consistency which allows customers to know what to expect when they stop at
    any McDonalds franchise.

George Bell's original restaurant was based on the McDonald Brother's blueprint. In Southern California he noticed the taqueria across the street was bringing in more business than his burger place, so he switched over to tacos and burritos. That was the cool thing about the McDonald brothers framework in that it wasn't tied to one type of food.

Yeah, it makes sense. I think there's trade-offs with buying local vs. from the corporation too. Where I am, there's a local chain of fast food restaurants (called Burgerville) that sources ingredients from local companies, and I think their food is good, though I'm not sure how their model would work if they went nationwide or more. They probably wouldn't be able to be locally sourced as easily. Maybe their thing would be using northwest US sourcing, though that probably wouldn't be as attractive outside the NW US region.
