I put a lot of work into HAvens BBS and just don't have it in me to start over again. I will miss my users but I'll never run a BBS again.

I don't see why there's any maintenence at all. Once a BBS is setup and running (Especially Sychronet) it should run itself. There are BBS's I know of the Sysop never checks in other then to make sure it's plugged in.

see, it's people like you who ruin it for everyone. now this person might not give free hosting to another dumbass because the next dumbass will blame them when something goes wrong. that was YOUR system. you could have taken care of it, but you didnt.

That's why I run my BBS on a dedicated thin client PC in my home, I control everthing including my firewall.

Well I check into both my BBS's and sometimes I change a few things or add door games welcome new users etc..
Both BBS's are stable, One (This one) runs synchronet, my other BBS runs Mystic.

Nothing against MarissaG, but I would never, ever run any kind of BBS on "managed" hosting, primarily because of the issue you're having now. It does take some of the pain and suffering away from the day-to-day, but that pain & suffering is all part of the process.

I've been kind of out of the loop a bit, did you lose access to the backups? are they corrupt? Is there anything we can do to help?

this guy had all of this for free and it was a good deal. he screwed up the system multiple times an marissa fixed it for him. it really pisses me off to see freeloaders like this try to blame the provider. it takes no effort to make a backup and download it to home.

there's nothing wrong with managed hosting or getting your own dedicated hosting... if your provider is stable. in this guy's case it's a case of operator stupidity.

Thanks man but I don't know what happened with Marisa. I tried restoring with 5 different backups. Then Marisa setup a new BBS and wanted me to copy the files from the old BBS to the new one. I thought about and said enough is enough. I'm just not interested in running a BBS anymore. If I had my own internet and servers I might start another one but honestly BBS land needs more users. Not SysOPs. Pharcyde has always been my goto bbs. It's reliable and has everything I need and want with in a BBS. The ANsi work is great too. Thanks for the offer but the world can so without another BBS.

For $5/month you can get a VPS on a site like Linode (there are many
others also), and run SBBS (on Linux) there. It's virtually 100% uptime
and backups/restores are trivial. I have a testing/experimental BBS
that I run on a Linode, and it's NEVER failed. You're out of excuses.

what do you mean crashing?

if the OS took a dump, and you had backups, your provider could have put it back up in about 20 mins and then you restore with your backups.

i'd rather cut my own dick off than rent a server to a moron.from what i've heard you junked your server multiple times.

if you want to rent a cheap server, go on OVH. figure out how to work it yourself. it's not hard. you wont find someone to kiss your ass and baby you unless you pay them a lot of money.
