• QWK packet reader for Win3.1?

From Thomas L.@VERT/MAGNUMUK to All on Tue Jun 8 07:24:25 2021
    Hello everyone,

I am seeking for a good piece of software that could handle QWK packets retrieved from Synchronet, and that would work graphically under Windows 3.1.
I have already tested ColorQWK but it doesn't seem to handle the packets I got from MagnumBBS well.

    Any pointer/hint?
    Thanks!

Have you tried CMPQwk for Windows? I have it running under Windows 3.1.
I have tried it a few times, but prefer the DOS based readers.

Checkout TITANIC BBS (telnet on port 23: ttb.rgbbs.info) for a HUGE
collection of files (they have tons of online CDROMS with files).

There was an app called Wave Rider that read BlueWave packets. Chances are that it might read QWK packets, too?

    Maybe Sempoint will work?

    -=} SemPoint v2.26 for Windows {=-
SemPoint is the 1st Offline Reader for
Windows useful to both BBS Users and to
FidoNet Points (or Sysops). It can
    handle QWK, BlueWave, Mc-Link's X)press
and Usenet newsgroups mail packets, as
well as permanent message bases in *.MSG
(Fido), Hudson, Squish, JAM end EzyCom
formats! EASY to use, but powerful!
    Built-in zip/unzip, UUEncode/Decode,
PGP shell, Rich Text display feature,
    message sorting, TIC generator.
    Multilingual: English, Italian, French,
    Spanish, Catalan, Swedish, German and
    Dutch editions available!

One place where it is available: http://archives.thebbs.org/

    SEMP226.ZIP 719K 12-04-1999

But.. I think there is a final 226a as well.

I created a little 2min video on what it looks like:

    http://kolico.ca/fidonet/files/sempoint-preview.zip

I go over the menu and reveal some options and settings. You will see a
lot of familiar BBS terms and features that this point program can
    implement.

(It is my very first screen recording, ever, on my XP laptop, and with an unfamiliar program, so forgive me if it isn't elegant. The recording has a minor video artifact, but it does not obscure anything important.)

I use Sempoint to access some QWK-only networks.

    Hello,

Thanks a lot for this valuable input, the program installed perfectly and works perfectly fine with QWK packets!

I will now take time to get accustomed to it, your video is very valuable, thanks for taking the time to record it.

    Best regards

Well.. thank YOU for saying all that. I think Sempoint's
database-style of operations will grow on you.

You will find many customization options. Most of the fido
features of stealing taglines, configuring random taglines,
quoting, commenting, forwarding, and moving the speedbar from
the top of the screen to either side of the screen, built-in uuencoding/decoding, font and colour adjustments, [and much
    more].. are nifty considerations.

At this time, Sempoint is best with QWK or BW only. Together
with another user, we experimented with setting it up for
modern-day pointing, but that had some limitations as well as
flaws in the JAM messagebase option.

By default, the QWK and/or BW method uses Squish, and it is
    best to stick with that.

    Have fun!
