• BBS Client on an old iMac running OS9

From Knightbbs@VERT/ENSEMBLE to All on Sat Apr 10 00:45:56 2021
Hey everyone, not sure if this message goes here but, i'm new to BBS'ing. Currently i'm using Syncterm on a Raspberry Pi, but I would like to get even more retro in my BBS experience by actually doing it on a retro computer. I have a fully restored iMac G4 sitting in my office running OS9. I can hook it up to the network and get online and was wondering if you know of any good BBS Clients for that system ? Again sorry if I'm in the wrong part of this sub, please point me to the right board if I am.

Probably SyncTERM on the mac also. I have never used it myself, or a mac at all but there is a mac version of SyncTERM also.. :)

In all honesty, just access Terminal and SSH outbound. If you need to access a telnet based system, you shouldn't have any issues. I don't believe OS9 has the latest OpenSSL libraries so you may have issues with SSH.

    Good luck.

if your term is utf-8 and the bbs doesn't detect it you can do this too:

    telnet bbs.com | iconv -f cp437

... assuming you have iconv installed of course :)

that said i can almost guarantee there's a really nice OS9 term with zmodem and the works.. but it probably originally did (or does) cost money.. and it's probably so burried under modern mac stuff you'd never find it in google without knowing it's name.. lol

You are correct. OS9 Or the latest supported version of OSX on the G4 no longer have the supported ssh libraries :( This makes connecting out via ssh not an option, so only bbs's that still support Telnet remain. Bit of a shame but it is what it is. I was thinking of using my old G3 iMac in the office to get that full retro feel again so I might have a go at Telnet'ing into a BBS instead of SSH.

Was going to suggest Linux... looks like 32bit PPC is effectively a
dead/old platform without recent support for Debian/Ubuntu at least.

    Some recent/active options:

I'll give those a try. I have an old iMac (intel) in the attic running Raspbian OS (Linux runs fine on these machines). Its been a while since I ran a PPC Linux version so i'll see what mintppc looks like. Thank you for the suggestion.

BBS's don't actually use "clients." You connect to them via a "terminal emulation program." Anything that would support telnet, rlogin or ssh protocols should work. Telnet is the least secure, rlogin and ssh are better. Telnet is probably the most commonly available and supported protocol. As with PCs the choice of terminal software with Macs will largely be a matter of personal preference. Google is probably your best friend in your search.

Sorry, but "terminal emulation programs" are clients if you are using telnet, rlogin, or ssh to access a BBS. It's also correct to say that the BBS is the server. The Internet is built on the client/server model.

For telnet look for MacTelnet or Better Telnet 2. For serial use
ZTerm. Probably can find them at macintoshgarden.org.

Thank you sir for the tip:) I might dig up the iMac now for some BBS'ing fun on a true retro machine. One of the tings i'm using right now is running Syncterm on my Raspberry Pi and connecting to it over SSH Using my iPad. Its quite funky to have an "advanced" device connected to a "classic" medium , but aside from some minor glitches it works pretty darn well too :)

I haven't read the article, but I'm not sure what you mean by an old version of an OS no longer having the supported libraries.. An old version of an OS doesn't change, so it couldn't just no longer have a library. Do you mean the new software has changed and now requires a different library, or a new version of the library that isn't available for the old OS?
